Be warned: This article reveals significant plot details from the movie Weapons. If you haven’t watched it yet (it’s now streaming on HBO Max), you might want to stop reading now to avoid spoilers!
Thinking about all the movies I saw in 2025, the ending of Zach Cregger’s Weapons (which ranked highly among the year’s best films) stands out as my favorite. The movie itself is a thrilling, unpredictable ride, but the climax is truly exceptional. Seeing Amy Madigan’s character, the unsettling Aunt Gladys, desperately running from a group of children was a fantastic and terrifying moment that audiences loved. It’s even more impressive knowing Madigan did most of the running herself, without a stunt double!
Madigan discussed filming the popular horror movie and its wild ending with Empire magazine. She revealed that the scene of Aunt Gladys running through yards and houses was performed by her personally. While some people were worried about her doing the physical stunts, she felt it was important for her to do it herself to fully embody the character. She shared this with the magazine, saying…
I really enjoyed all the running scenes. The producers were a little worried about me doing my own stunts – they imagined I might slip and get hurt, like crashing into a door! But I insisted I was capable of handling it myself.
During the final act of Weapons, Aunt Gladys is unexpectedly forced to run for her life when her own dark magic is turned against her. Alex, a young boy, manages to perform the spell Gladys used to abduct his seventeen classmates, and they all angrily attack her. She tries to escape by running through the neighborhood, but the children eventually catch her and overpower her.
Amy Madigan dominated the race, but she acknowledges stepping back and letting someone else lead briefly at one point.
When I get tackled at the end and smooshed to the ground, no, I did not do that.
Despite everything, she reappeared when Aunt Gladys was dying. The children then overwhelm her, physically tearing her apart with their hands and teeth. While incredibly violent on screen, Amy Madigan described filming the scene as enjoyable, noting the young actors relished the chance to get back at the character who had previously kidnapped them.
Everyone was really enthusiastic! We filmed it from countless angles, and they kept playfully bumping into and playfully attacking me. It seemed like they were having a great time.
Zach Cregger explained to me this summer that filming the scene was incredibly difficult to organize – with children breaking through windows and doors while pursuing Aunt Gladys, it was quite a challenge. He even had stressful nightmares for weeks after shooting finished. But ultimately, he felt all the effort was justified.
Seeing the ending of Weapons for the first time was incredible, and it’s just as enjoyable to watch again. Now that it’s been in theaters this summer, the movie is available to stream, buy digitally, rent, and on both 4K UHD and Blu-ray.
