When “Pluribus,” the new series from “Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan, premiered on Apple TV in November 2025, it quickly generated a lot of buzz. As the show went on, it became clear it would be a major success for the streaming service. “Pluribus” has since broken Apple TV records, and for good reason – it tells a captivating and original story with a wonderful cast, especially Rhea Seehorn. However, the season finale was disappointing. While I’m glad the show has been renewed for a second season, I’m frustrated that we have to wait so long for a proper conclusion.
The Finale Felt Like a Penultimate Episode

Many shows end their seasons with dramatic cliffhangers – think of series like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead. Severance on Apple TV is also known for particularly frustrating, yet clever, season finales. However, the new show Pluribus, which everyone’s been looking forward to in 2025, didn’t leave viewers with a mystery to ponder until the next season. Instead, the ending felt like a loose end that should have been tied up in a subsequent episode… but unfortunately, there won’t be any more episodes this season.
I wasn’t the only one obsessively verifying the episode count, needing to confirm it was only nine, not ten, and then feeling disappointed when it ended. It was jarring to see Carol so determined again, just as she was at the beginning. She’s fully committed to stopping the joining, having broken free from her feelings for Zosia. She now understands she was mistaken to think she could reach Zosia as an individual, separate from the group’s collective mind. Still, the ending felt abrupt and left many questions unanswered.
Honestly, I felt shortchanged by the lack of scenes between Carol and Manousos. And that whole conversation about joining – the one with Zosia – just didn’t feel fully explored. When Carol finally realized – like I suspected she would – that they were planning to use her frozen eggs for stem cells to manipulate her into joining, I was expecting a much bigger confrontation. I get that Carol’s trying to stay calm to protect others, and that explains her reaction, but still, it felt a little muted. It was equally heartbreaking to hear they ‘love’ her, but it’s the same kind of love they have for Manousos and the other members – now down to ten. Carol is clearly important to them, but it’s not the unique, personal connection she believes she has with Zosia. The frustrating thing is, we didn’t see Carol process that realization, her inner turmoil. We just jumped straight to her impulsive decision after finding out. I wanted more of her reaction, her solitude with that information.
It’s frustrating that the season ends without resolving much of anything, especially since we probably won’t get answers for a long time. The finale doesn’t offer any real food for thought, except whether Carol will actually use the atom bomb – which, realistically, she won’t, as that would destroy everything. We’re left with the same questions we had at the beginning of the season, wondering what happens next. Ultimately, the biggest mysteries remain unsolved, leaving me feeling unfulfilled.
Little Progress Came Out of Season 1

Season 1 did offer some interesting insights into the hive mind – its origins, how it functions, and the lives of those connected to it. However, Carol’s storyline feels stuck. We still don’t know why she’s immune to the hive mind, or how close the others are to being able to assimilate her stem cells and force her to join. We find out one of the thirteen has willingly joined, but the fates of the rest remain a mystery. Last seen, Koumba was enjoying life in Las Vegas, while Laxmi repeatedly calls Carol whenever another member gets upset, and Carol’s son suffers the consequences, as Laxmi assumes Carol is responsible.
We don’t know much about Manousos’ research, only that it involves strange notes in his book, trying to awaken a hive mind with radio noise, and studying electromagnetic energy. He’s discovered the name the hive mind uses for the planet where their technology comes from, but nothing else about the planet or any life that might live there.
Carol seems to be reaching a crisis, but the show hasn’t revealed it yet – we’ll likely have to wait until the next season. She first met Manousos while developing feelings for Zosia and reevaluating her life. We were expecting to see the more stressed and uncertain Carol from a few weeks prior interact with him, not the calmer version we’re currently seeing.
The finale felt surprisingly sudden and unsatisfying, not living up to expectations. Despite the show being one of the best new series this year, the ending felt like a missed opportunity. While a completely conclusive ending might have prevented a second season, too much felt hurried and underdeveloped, leaving many interesting storylines unexplored.

The later episodes also raise some puzzling questions. For example, how does the group manage to get food with the HDP system? And why do they think it’s right to use Carol’s frozen eggs for stem cells, even though she specifically asked them not to? They consistently claim to want to do what’s best for Carol and avoid hurting her, but this action would clearly cause her significant emotional pain. Given that Pluribus is one of the year’s strongest sci-fi/fantasy shows, I was hoping for a more satisfying finale.
I’ll definitely be watching Season 2. And yes, I’d still recommend this show when people ask for suggestions. However, I’ll now add a warning that the first season’s ending wasn’t as satisfying as I’d expected. It didn’t deliver a big, impactful finale – it just hinted at potential conflict to come.
