‘The Office’s Melora Hardin Says She “Burst Into Tears” After Being Fired From ‘Back to the Future’

Melora Hardin, famous for playing Jan Levinson on The Office, recently shared that she cried when she was let go from the 1985 film Back to the Future. She was removed from the movie after Eric Stoltz, who originally played Marty McFly, was replaced, and the filmmakers decided she wasn’t the right fit for the part of Marty’s girlfriend, Jennifer Parker.

Lea Thompson recently discussed her brief role in Back to the Future with Entertainment Weekly. While she’d already been acting in movies and television since the late 1970s, Thompson was still a young teenager at the time, and she described being fired from the project as “very tough.”

I was really disappointed by Back to the Future. I was only 17 at the time, and I actually cried. It was a tough experience, and I remember feeling quite sad about it. There were several projects I recall that never came to fruition, and that one really stung.

Getting to where I am today means experiencing a lot more setbacks than successes. People often don’t see that from the outside. It takes a certain comfort with failure and a willingness to constantly take risks.

Earlier this year, Hardin explained why she was taken off the project after another actor was fired. She said that two female executives at the time apparently felt it would be damaging to the male lead’s image to appear in scenes with an actress taller than him. Hardin believes if she had stayed on, the show would have turned out very differently, and she wouldn’t have created The Office.

In his memoir, “Future Boy,” actor Michael J. Fox discussed the firing of Melora Hardin from Back to the Future. He explained that his height was an advantage when he played younger characters, but became a problem when seeking romantic roles with taller actresses. He felt this created a bias that unfairly impacted Hardin’s casting. Director Bob Zemeckis initially hoped audiences wouldn’t notice their height difference, but feedback from the female crew members indicated that a popular, taller girl wouldn’t typically choose a shorter boyfriend. Fox regretted not being asked for his opinion, as he would have supported Hardin.

The ‘Back to the Future’ Recasts Did Anything but Hurt the Film

Universal Pictures

Although it’s not a big concern now, the changes in actors for Back to the Future did cause some problems during filming. Every scene with Marty McFly had to be filmed again, and director Robert Zemeckis also had to rework some other parts of the movie because they couldn’t be filmed as originally planned. Michael J. Fox, meanwhile, was also busy filming the TV show Family Ties, so he had to juggle both projects.

I remember being so thrilled when Back to the Future came out – it was the biggest movie of 1985 and really set the standard for time travel films! It launched this amazing franchise that people still adore. But things weren’t always smooth sailing behind the scenes. For the second movie, Back to the Future Part II, there was a disagreement over pay with Crispin Glover, who played George McFly, and he ended up not being in it. And sadly, Claudia Wells, who played Jennifer, decided to leave to care for her mom who wasn’t well. It was a bit of a shake-up, but the movies still hold a special place in my heart.
