For more than ten years, superhero movies have been incredibly popular at the box office. However, things are starting to change, and recent superhero TV shows demonstrate that viewers’ tastes are evolving. Superhero stories have always been a part of what people enjoy, but it took a while for them to become widely accepted.

Superhero stories gradually gained popularity from the 1970s through the 1990s, attracting talented directors and actors. This trend really took off in the 2000s with the success of films like the X-Men trilogy and Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, and then the launch of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Iron Man.

Superhero Fatigue Has Hurt The Genre At The Box Office

For a long time, superhero movies were the biggest draw at the box office, consistently ranking among the top-grossing films. But recently, that’s changed. The latest phases of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) haven’t performed as well, losing some of their previous momentum and facing criticism for being confusing.

Even with three new Marvel movies and the launch of the DC Universe with Superman in 2025, those four films together only earned as much worldwide as the year’s biggest hit, the Chinese animated film Ne Zha 2. This film achieved global success when many others struggled.

Loki’s Multiple-Season Story Arc Broke The MCU Big-Screen Mold

Marvel Studios has had some initial challenges with its TV series, despite generally strong viewer ratings. However, one show has truly excelled and offers a good model for future series in this style.

I was so excited when Loki came out in 2021 – it felt different from anything else in the MCU, and it definitely made me think we’d see more of him! The show really dove deep into Loki’s character, giving us a side of him we hadn’t really seen in the movies. Over the past couple of years, with those 12 episodes, it’s been amazing to watch him change from a villain into someone who’s trying to be a hero across the multiverse. Honestly, the quality of everything – the story, the acting, the visuals – was just top-notch.

These days, most people enjoy watching shows on TV, and with the popularity of streaming services, they like being able to watch multiple episodes back-to-back whenever they want. It appears TV is now the preferred way to experience superhero stories.

Daredevil: Born Again, Peacemaker, & The Boys Are All Delivering The Bulk Of Their Stories On TV

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe created an amazing interconnected world through its films, television can achieve the same thing, and offers the added benefit of being more accessible and comfortable to watch.

I love the experience of going to the movies – being immersed in a story and sharing it with an audience. However, I also understand that streaming has completely transformed how we watch movies and shows.

Shows such as Daredevil: Born Again, while connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will mainly tell Matt Murdock’s story through multiple seasons on television. Peacemaker successfully spanned the transition between the DCEU and DCU with two fantastic seasons, and series like The Boys demonstrate that extensive superhero narratives can thrive primarily on streaming and TV.

The change is already underway, and it’s natural for the superhero genre to focus more on television now.
