Amazon’s Remake of a 127-Year-Old Sci-Fi Classic Declared the Worst Movie of 2025

As 2025 comes to a close, many “best of” and “worst of” lists are appearing. Currently, Amazon’s recent remake of a well-known 127-year-old science fiction story is at the top of Metacritic’s “worst” list. Like Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic calculates an average score from professional movie reviews, giving films a rating between 0 and 100. The lowest-rated film of 2025 has earned a score of only six – and that’s not a mistake.

A popular review website recently revealed its list of the 15 worst movies from the past year, including comedies, action films, horror movies, and even a film featuring Jack Reacher. Starting with number 15, the list begins with the action comedy Old Guy, starring Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz.

The list continues with the Colleen Hoover film Regretting You at number 14, followed by Johnny Depp’s biographical drama Modì, Three Days on the Wing of Madness at number 13, and the newest Smurfs movie at number 12. The poorly received musical Juliet & Romeo comes in at number 11, while Netflix’s expensive action film The Electric State debuted with a low score of 30/100 at number 10.

The thriller Hurry Up Tomorrow, starring Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Jenna Ortega, is currently ranked #9. Following it are The Strangers: Chapter 2 (#8), the action thriller Shadow Force (#7), and the video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (#6). However, even these films seem well-made compared to the movies in the Top 5.

Alan Ritchson’s Amazon Action Movie Failed With… Everyone

Prime Video

The director of The Mechanic made a film called Bride Hard with Rebel Wilson, but it didn’t go over well, landing at number 5 on Metacritic’s list of worst movies of 2025 with a score of 23. Sylvester Stallone’s action thriller, Alarum, came in at number 4, also with a 23, which is surprisingly good considering it received a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The third worst movie of the year was Nicolas Cage’s Western, Gunslingers, scoring only 20/100. According to MovieWeb‘s Will Sayre, it felt like a letdown, offering nothing new to the genre.

Coming in at number two – though it’s hardly a compliment, given how bad this list is – is Reacher and its star, Alan Ritchson, along with his Prime Video series Playdate. Playdate, which also stars Kevin James, received a score of 20 and has been described by critics as both confusing and boring. Hopefully, Ritchson will achieve the success he deserves in his future action projects.

Topping Metacritic’s list of the worst movies of 2025 is War of the Worlds, a Universal Pictures and Amazon Prime Video production. The film, starring Ice Cube, takes a bizarre approach to H.G. Wells’ classic 1898 novel by presenting the alien invasion entirely through the perspective of a Department of Homeland Security officer watching it unfold on his computer screen.
