James Gunn shared the reason why Lars Eidinger was announced as Brainiac before any official casting news came out for The Batman – Part II. Gunn revealed on social media on December 20th that Eidinger would be playing Brainiac in Man of Tomorrow.
A new Superman movie was announced earlier this year and is expected to come out on July 9, 2027. While rumors suggest Scarlett Johansson will be in The Batman – Part II, which is slated for release on October 1, 2027, DC hasn’t confirmed any new cast members yet.
James Gunn explained on Threads that the announcement about who would play Brainiac came early because he and Peter Safran wanted to control the narrative and avoid leaks. He also clarified that he and Safran are only producing the next Batman movie, and it’s unusual for any film – even those from DC – to make big announcements before filming has started. You can see Gunn’s original post below.

Both Man of Tomorrow and The Batman – Part II are scheduled to start filming in the first six months of 2026, with plans for them to hit theaters in 2027. James Gunn will direct and write Man of Tomorrow, which is a key part of the DCU’s “Gods and Monsters” storyline, and will begin production shortly after Superman is released in the summer of 2025.
The next Batman movie is a separate story outside of the main DC Universe, and James Gunn isn’t heavily involved in its development. We likely won’t hear official news about Scarlett Johansson or other cast members until production actually starts.
The quick announcement of who will play Brainiac seems surprising, especially considering how long fans have been waiting for any news about The Batman – Part II. The first movie was released on March 4, 2022, and updates on the sequel have been scarce.
Although most of the story is still secret, the movie will begin a few weeks after the finale of The Penguin, the HBO Max series starring Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb. It will also continue to follow Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of Batman.
The next Superman movie will feature an unlikely team-up between Superman (David Corenswet) and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) to fight the villain Brainiac. As production begins on the Superman sequel and The Batman – Part II, we can expect more details about the cast to be announced soon.
