Kelsey Grammer, the voice of Sideshow Bob, has hinted that the character might not appear in a potential Simpsons Movie 2. Sideshow Bob first showed up in the very first season of The Simpsons and has become a famous villain. He started as Krusty the Clown’s assistant, and after being mistreated, tried to blame Krusty for a crime. Bart always managed to stop him, and Bob has repeatedly tried to get revenge on Bart ever since.
While speaking with ScreenRant about his movie Turbulence, Kelsey Grammer shared that he only recently found out about The Simpsons Movie 2, just like everyone else. The Emmy-winning actor mentioned that no one from the film’s team has contacted him yet regarding his return as Sideshow Bob for the sequel.
Thinking like a producer, Kelsey Grammer considered what role his character, Sideshow Bob, could play in a potential Simpsons movie. He suggested the film might actually be stronger without Sideshow Bob as the main antagonist. Grammer explained that he’s usually the driving force behind a particular type of story, and he wasn’t sure that approach would work for a full-length movie.
Okay, so the idea of a whole movie centered around Sideshow Bob’s ongoing quest for revenge on Bart? It’s been consistently entertaining watching the creative, over-the-top schemes he comes up with. I particularly loved the episode where he was performing opera – seeing him at La Scala in Italy was a peak moment. Honestly, it was so good, it feels like everything else pales in comparison. It set the bar incredibly high!
Grammer mentioned the possibility of a brief appearance in the film, but not as the main villain. He didn’t want his character to overshadow the other popular characters and storylines the sequel could feature, and he wasn’t sure how Sideshow Bob would even fit in. He expressed some uncertainty about the role.
Despite everything, Grammer said he would be “very happy” to return for a sequel to The Simpsons Movie. He also mentioned that his whole family are big fans of the show. They even want to visit the Simpsons Ride area at Universal Studios Hollywood every “three or four months” to celebrate their birthdays.
With so many characters over the years in The Simpsons, it’s understandable that people debate whether Sideshow Bob should come back. The well-received 2007 film managed to include a lot of both main and supporting characters, while also introducing new faces like Russ Cargill, voiced by Albert Brooks.
Since the last Simpsons movie came out 18 years ago, the show has retired several characters for different reasons. For example, Apu, the Kwik-E-Mart owner, appeared much less after concerns were raised about him being a stereotypical South Asian character. Similarly, Edna Krabappel was written out of the show following the passing of her voice actress, Marcia Wallace.
Sideshow Bob’s latest appearance, a parody of The White Lotus in Season 36, might set the stage for his return in The Simpsons Movie 2. After Marge inadvertently ruined his chance at a normal relationship by warning his new partner about his history, Bob could now be plotting revenge against the entire Simpson family – a familiar pattern for the character throughout the show’s run.
According to Grammer, several things could prevent Sideshow Bob from appearing in a potential Simpsons Movie 2. He points out that a scene featuring the character was cut from the first film, and the writers might be wary of using him too much or not enough. However, given how naturally they integrated other returning characters into the original movie, there’s still a chance the actor could reprise his role as the spiky-haired villain.
