Disney Makes Major Change to 2027 Release Schedule

Disney is already making changes to its movie release plans for 2027. While fans are still looking forward to the 2026 schedule, which includes highly anticipated films like Avengers: Doomsday and Toy Story 5, Disney is already adjusting its lineup for the following year.

In 2027, Hollywood plans to release a wave of major films, including the highly anticipated Pixar movie, Gatto. This original story follows an unusual cat who must complete a dangerous mission to repay a powerful crime boss. Originally intended for a summer release, the film’s debut has been rescheduled.

Pixar has announced that its new animated film, Gatto, will now be released on March 5, 2027, moving up its original release date of June 18, 2027, according to Deadline.

Moving the movie’s release date is a big change for Disney and might suggest they aren’t as sure about its success. Pixar usually releases its major films in June, a prime summer movie season – think hits like Inside Out 2, Toy Story 4, and Cars 3. They’ve even planned next year’s Toy Story 5, expected to be a huge blockbuster in 2026, for a June release.

See below for several Pixar movie June releases over the last decade:

  • Toy Story 5 – June 19, 2026
  • Inside Out 2 – June 14, 2024
  • Elemental – June 16, 2023
  • Lightyear – June 17, 2022
  • Toy Story 4 – June 21, 2019
  • Incredibles 2 – June 15, 2018
  • Cars 3 – June 16, 2017
  • Finding Dory – June 17, 2016

All of the films mentioned were either successful at the box office or expected to be. The exception was Lightyear, which didn’t perform well with critics or audiences. However, because it was connected to the hugely popular Toy Story series, Disney still believed in its potential and released it during a prime summer movie release window.

Disney has a lot of exciting movies planned for 2027! We already know about several big releases coming from their studios like Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, and here’s a look at some of them:

Disney’s 2027 Theatrical Release Schedule

  • Ice Age: Boiling Point – February 5th, 2027
  • Gatto – March 5th, 2027
  • Star Wars: Starfighter – May 28th, 2027
  • Bluey: The Movie – August 6th, 2027
  • The Simpsons 2 – September 3rd, 2027
  • Frozen 3 – November 24th, 2027
  • Avengers: Secret Wars – December 17th, 2027

Enrico Casarosa, the director of Luca, brings us Gatto, a new animated film set in a beautifully painted Italy. This makes Gatto the seventh Pixar movie to take place outside of the United States. Currently, Gatto is the only Pixar film with a confirmed release date on Disney’s schedule, as release dates for sequels like Coco 2 and The Incredibles 3 are still to be announced.

Why Did Disney Movie Gatto’s Release?

Originally, Pixar planned to release Gatto as its major film in 2027. However, that plan is now uncertain. While Gatto remains the only Pixar movie currently scheduled for release in 2027, moving it from its planned June release date is concerning.

Disney likely delayed the film’s release because they aren’t confident it’s strong enough to compete in the busy summer blockbuster season. This doesn’t mean the movie will be bad – it could still be good! Disney probably believes it will perform better if released in the early spring, when there’s less competition.

June 2027 is looking like a major month for big movies! Universal has scheduled the live-action sequel to How to Train Your Dragon for release then, Shrek 5 has been moved to that date, and after a long wait, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is now also expected in June.

These three films are likely to dominate the conversation around movies for a while. Disney probably wouldn’t have released their movie, Gatto, if they didn’t believe it could compete with those big releases.
