The eagerly expected and thrilling “Schumacher Cut” of the 1995 film, Batman Forever, received an unsatisfying revision at the hands of the renowned writer, Akiva Goldsman.
What is the latest Batman Forever Schumacher Cut update?
In a recent chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Goldsman (one of the three screenplay writers for the movie) discussed the current state of the controversial unseen footage. Following Schumacher’s demise in 2020, there seemed to be progress on it, but unfortunately, as of now, there isn’t much positive news to share.
Following Joel’s untimely passing in 2020, I approached Warner Bros. with an intriguing proposition: “I sensed a darker, more compelling narrative for this film.” To my delight, we unearthed it. Though incomplete, it is surprisingly more developed than one might expect. Today, vast swathes of visual effects would be missing, but back then, much of it was crafted through miniatures and practical effects – they were already complete. We were in the process of polishing it up, but as time wore on, interest waned. However, I remain steadfast in advocating for its revival.
Goldsman pointed out several key distinctions between the darker version of the movie. Specifically, the character of Bruce Wayne (played by Val Kilmer) experienced repeated glimpses of his father’s diary, and there was a scene where he momentarily forgot that he was Batman.
Bruce keeps experiencing repeated images of a crimson journal, which he later discovers belongs to his father and contains an entry: “Martha and I prefer staying home tonight; Bruce wishes to watch a film, so we’re taking him out.” This makes him feel guilty for their deaths as stated by Goldsman. In the movie, there’s a scene where he gets struck on the head, causing him to forget that he is Batman, and he returns to the batcave. There, he encounters the well-known Rick Baker bat.
In 1995, the movie known as Batman Forever hit the screens, with Val Kilmer portraying both Bruce Wayne and Batman. The cast also included Tommy Lee Jones as Harvey Dent transformed into Two-Face, Jim Carrey as the cunning Edward Nygma, aka The Riddler, Nicole Kidman in the role of Dr. Chase Meridian, Chris O’Donnell as Dick Grayson, Michael Gough as Alfred Pennyworth, and Pat Hingle as James Gordon.
