‘Completely Unacceptable’: Jodie Sweetin Gets Candid About Being ‘Very Different’ From Candace Cameron Bure After Faith-Based Backlash

As a longtime fan of Full House, it’s heartwarming to see how close the cast became during the show’s eight-season run in the ‘80s and ‘90s. But, as many will remember this holiday season, not everyone always gets along. Jodie Sweetin and Candace Cameron Bure had disagreements in the past due to differing opinions on marriage, and while Sweetin says they weren’t locked in a full feud, she’s been open about their fundamental differences.

Candace Cameron Bure addressed the criticism she received after a 2022 interview with the Wall Street Journal. She explained that her Christian faith led her to love everyone equally, no matter their background, beliefs, or identity. This followed support from Jodie Sweetin for those, like JoJo Siwa, who had voiced concerns, which led to Bure unfollowing Sweetin on social media. Sweetin recently discussed the situation in detail on The Moment podcast, saying:

Candace is a deeply religious person, and I respect anyone finding comfort in their faith. I don’t know if her specific beliefs bring her peace, but that’s not the point. For me, true love requires genuine respect, and that means supporting people’s fundamental rights – like the right to choose their own partner and make decisions about their own bodies. Without that respect, what feels like love is more like condescension, and it isn’t the same thing.

Look, I’m a huge Full House fan, and it’s easy to assume everything was sunshine and roses on set. But honestly? These two clearly care about each other, and disagreements happen in every family. It turns out Jodie Sweetin (Stephanie) and Candace Cameron Bure (DJ) – Bob Saget’s on-screen daughters – are just as relatable as the rest of us. As Jodie Sweetin put it…

She felt like a sister to me. We had a close, sometimes complicated relationship – we argued a lot, just like sisters do, and that’s been true since we were children.

Jodie Sweetin, a longtime supporter of the LGBTQ+ community and advocate for various causes, pointed out that judging or devaluing people for being different contradicts the core teachings of Christianity. She then stated:

I believe it’s wrong to mistreat people simply because they’re different, and I suspect Jesus would agree. Though I’m not Christian myself, it just seems like the right thing to do.

Jodie Sweetin explained that Candace Cameron Bure preferred to focus on her faith and avoid political discussions. Unlike Bure, Sweetin wasn’t worried about alienating people – she was comfortable with the idea that some might enjoy her role on Full House but disagree with her personal views.

I make an effort not to let others’ expectations define me or create obstacles to becoming who I want to be, and Candace and I approach this differently. She tended to be more reserved, while I’ve always been outspoken and energetic.

When rumors of a falling-out between the actresses surfaced, other cast members, like Dave Coulier, shared that they often had minor disagreements, similar to a family, but they genuinely cared for one another.
