After Avengers: Endgame, a return for a key character from the original comic books seemed unlikely. However, a recent preview for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday suggests it’s now a real possibility. Despite Steve Rogers’ story concluding in Phase 3, Chris Evans appears set to reprise his role as Captain America.
The initial teaser for Avengers: Doomsday doesn’t offer many details, but it does show us Steve Rogers sometime after he went back to 1949 to live with Peggy Carter. It appears he’s enjoying retirement from being a superhero, and now has a son.
It looks like the original Captain America will be returning soon, likely to fight Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. We don’t know exactly what his role will be, but it’s safe to assume he’ll team up with characters from the Doomsday storyline, including Winter Soldier, Thor, and the current Captain America.
Seeing familiar characters will likely be just one piece of Steve Rogers’ next Marvel story. There’s also a possibility Captain America will encounter Namor, which could be significant given their complex relationship in the comics.
Namor Is One Of Steve Rogers’ Oldest Allies In Marvel Comics
Captain America and Namor have been allies in Marvel Comics since the 1940s. They were both original members of the Invaders, a superhero team formed with the first Human Torch to assist the Allied forces during World War II.
Similar to many Marvel heroes, Captain America and Namor became rivals when Namor reappeared in modern times. Because they had been allies in the past, their relationship was more complex than Captain America’s with other heroes like the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, and his fellow Avengers.
Namor is famous for his large ego and doesn’t particularly care for most people, including many superheroes in the Marvel Universe. However, he consistently shows respect for Captain America. Despite often disagreeing, Namor acknowledges Steve Rogers’ bravery and good qualities, and treats him with more courtesy than almost anyone else.
Captain America sees Namor in a unique light, unlike most people. He actually extended an invitation for Namor to join the Avengers back in the 1990s. Because of their long history, Captain America understands that Namor is a complex person who has experienced a lot of hardship.
The MCU’s Steve Rogers Could Meet The Namor Of His Timeline
Fans have long hoped to see Captain America and Namor interact – whether as allies or rivals – in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After Avengers: Endgame, it seemed impossible, as Captain America’s story had concluded before Marvel introduced Namor. However, with Chris Evans returning and Namor set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, that exciting possibility is now happening.
There are several ways Steve Rogers and Namor could meet in a future film. One idea is that Steve encounters Namor while traveling through the alternate timeline he’s currently in. Because Namor has lived for centuries, a meeting in the 1950s – when Steve was active – would definitely be possible.
Steve Rogers, even after retiring as Captain America, always felt compelled to defend Earth. There’s a possibility he teamed up with Namor to form the Invaders and protect the world sometime in the 1950s.
If Steve and Namor met at any point in this new timeline – even if we don’t see it happen – it would mean Steve has some existing knowledge of Namor when he eventually encounters the main version of him.
Steve Rogers’ MCU Return Could Make Namor A True Hero
Okay, so Namor did some seriously questionable things in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, let’s just say that. But anyone familiar with the comics knows he’s always been a complex character, capable of both terrible acts and, eventually, heroism. That’s why I’m actually optimistic about seeing him in Avengers: Doomsday – I really think we’re going to get a chance to see him try and make things right, and I’m excited to see if he can actually pull it off.

Steve Rogers offers a clever solution for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. By drawing on the dynamic between Namor and Captain America from the comics, a potential Avengers: Doomsday storyline could realistically bring Namor into the Avengers’ fold.
Steve Rogers has always had a natural talent for inspiring others and helping them perform at their best, both in the comics and the movies. This skill could be crucial if he needs to convince Namor to join the fight against Doctor Doom. If successful, Avengers: Doomsday could deliver a thrilling team-up in the final battle, paying homage to the many great collaborations between these characters in Marvel Comics.
