After almost six years of building towards the Multiverse Saga, Marvel Studios is acknowledging that it hasn’t worked out as planned. Following the huge success of the Infinity Saga, which ended with blockbuster films like Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: No Way Home, Marvel began setting up the story for their next major crossover event.
It felt like after losing Iron Man, Black Widow, and Captain America – three of the original Avengers – Marvel was ready to introduce a new team. The plan was to blend heroes we already knew and loved with some fresh, new faces. But honestly, things haven’t gone as smoothly as they did with the Infinity Saga. The Multiverse Saga just hasn’t felt as connected or as strong so far.
Marvel Studios had already planned its future movies in detail, making a major change of course impossible. However, recent announcements about Avengers: Doomsday strongly suggest that their Multiverse Saga hasn’t worked out as hoped.
The MCU Reverts To Its Biggest Infinity Saga Players For Avengers: Doomsday

The trailer for Avengers: Doomsday confirms Chris Evans will reprise his role as Steve Rogers. The film will show what happened to him after the end of Avengers: Endgame, when he went back in time to be with Peggy Carter. While it’s unclear how this fits into the Avengers’ next adventure, Marvel bringing Evans back suggests that the current storylines in the Multiverse Saga aren’t the main focus of the MCU’s ultimate finale.
The decision to bring Robert Downey Jr. back – even in a completely different role as Dr. Doom in Avengers: Doomsday – initially felt like a misstep for Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios. While that was controversial, it was better than simply resurrecting Tony Stark. Chris Evans’ return now confirms those concerns, as the biggest stars in Avengers: Doomsday are shaping up to be Evans and Downey Jr., not the main actors who drove the MCU’s Multiverse Saga.
Look, it’s not that Marvel’s lacking talent – far from it! The Multiverse Saga has given us a ton of exciting new characters and some seriously good actors. Plus, they’ve got all those heroes who started in the Infinity Saga and are still around. But honestly, no one new has really managed to capture the same level of attention or become as iconic as the original Avengers and their immediate crew. They’re just not breaking through in the same way.
Can The MCU Survive Past The Multiverse Saga?
Currently, Marvel Studios is counting on the huge success of both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars to set up the future of the franchise. However, they can’t rely on this strategy repeatedly. If they do, it will show the franchise is stuck in the past and unable to evolve beyond the Infinity Saga, effectively signaling its decline.

Look, the core of what makes a great franchise hasn’t changed – we need characters we love, stories that surprise us, and a universe that feels connected. Marvel’s proven they can do this before, and I’m optimistic they’ll get back on track. I really hope by the time the MCU starts its next chapter, they’ve taken the lessons from the Multiverse Saga to heart and learned from what didn’t work.
