In season 4 of Bridgerton, Penelope Bridgerton (born Penelope Featherington) will grapple with the difficulties of being Lady Whistledown, the most popular gossip writer in London society. Season 3 followed Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) as they fell in love, but it also revealed Penelope’s secret identity and how it shaped her journey to finding romance.
Season 4 of Bridgerton will focus on Benedict’s love story with Sophie Baek, but the whole Bridgerton family will be involved. We’ll see newlyweds Penelope and Colin navigate their new marriage, potentially revisiting their famous carriage ride. However, their happiness won’t come without challenges, as Penelope tries to balance her social life as Lady Whistledown with her role as a wife, according to showrunner Jess Brownell.
In a recent interview with TVLine, Bridgerton creator Chris Van Dusen explained that season four will be a significant one for Penelope Featherington. Now that she’s revealed herself as Lady Whistledown, she’s facing the challenge of being a gossip columnist when those she writes about know her identity.
Will Lady Whistledown be able to continue gathering gossip if everyone is wary of her, or will she have to rely on what she can overhear from the staff?
Luckily, Penelope has a supportive husband who appreciates her intelligence and influence. According to Brownell, Colin will be there for her in season 4, but their relationship will definitely face challenges.
The TV series handles Lady Whistledown’s story differently than the original Bridgerton books. In the books, Penelope and Colin’s romance happens after Benedict and Sophie’s, making it the fourth book in the series. In the novels, Penelope stops writing her gossip column once her identity is revealed, meaning it doesn’t continue throughout all the stories.

It’s hard to predict what Penelope will do with her career in future seasons of Bridgerton, now that she’s officially a member of the Bridgerton family. Will she face backlash from high society if she stops writing about them? Or will staying involved in the social scene help Benedict and Sophie bridge the gap created by their different social classes? Only time will tell.
I’m so excited – I just found out that the first part of Bridgerton season 4 is hitting Netflix on January 29, 2026! And if that wasn’t enough, we won’t have to wait too long for the second part, which is coming out on February 26th. I’ve already marked my calendar!
