DC Officially Unveils New Green Lantern Costume Ahead of James Gunn’s Reboot

DC has given fans a first look at a new Green Lantern costume ahead of the upcoming HBO Max series, Lanterns, produced by James Gunn. This marks a significant push into Green Lantern’s history, more so than previous DC Universe projects. The new direction began with the Superman film slated for 2025 and will expand in 2026 with both TV shows and new comic books.

DC Comics has revealed a new look for Kyle Rayner’s Green Lantern. An image from Green Lantern #600 (reported by Bleeding Cool) shows Rayner in a complete Lantern suit. The suit is primarily black and white across the chest, with green plating on his arms and legs, and a green mask.

Rayner has sported various appearances in the comics, and this is just one example. Here’s another recent design for the character, also featuring the classic black and white color scheme, but with green gloves and boots.

The new costume moves the Green Lantern logo from the upper left shoulder to the center of the chest. The green patterns have also been updated, giving a more balanced look to all three colors used in the design.

A previous version of Rayner’s costume used a lot more green, with the Green Lantern symbol on the upper left side of his chest. Green fabric covered his shoulders and chest, and his mask was significantly larger, extending further down his cheekbones and higher onto his forehead.

You know, when Ryan Reynolds played Green Lantern, his costume was pretty distinctive. He wore a full face mask, but it didn’t cover his whole head – you could still see his forehead and hair. And it had the classic look with white gloves and a huge Green Lantern logo right on the chest.

Rayner took a unique approach to the Green Lantern character, swapping the traditional green suit for blue when he became a Blue Lantern. Unlike other Lanterns who draw power from willpower, this version is fueled by hope.

One version of Rayner’s costume includes armored wings on his shoulders and gloves that leave his fingers exposed. His mask covers the lower half of his face, including his mouth.

Kyle holds a special place in Lantern Corps history because he was the first to combine the strengths of all seven Lantern Corps, becoming a White Lantern. This happened after he learned to control the seven emotions that power the different Lanterns, and he wore a white and grey uniform as a symbol of this new power.

As a big DC fan, I’m so excited about the Green Lantern Corps we’re finally getting from DC Studios! It’s kicking off with a glimpse in the upcoming Superman movie in 2025. We already got to see Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and his costume was awesome – mostly black and white, which really showed he’s part of both the Justice League and the Green Lantern Corps. It was a great little tease of things to come!

Fillion’s costume has elements in common with the one Rayner wears in the comics, like the white chest piece and sharp, angled patterns throughout.

In 2026, the DC Universe will welcome two new members of the Lantern Corps, including Hal Jordan as played by Kyle Chandler. Though his costume hasn’t been revealed yet, Hal Jordan will be portrayed as an experienced Lantern searching for someone to take his place on Earth.

I’m really excited to hear that Aaron Pierre is joining the Green Lantern movie as John Stewart! He’ll be playing one of the main Lanterns alongside Hal Jordan. Apparently, when we first meet him in 2026, he’ll be a brand new member of the Corps, so they’re keeping his suit a secret for now – which just adds to the anticipation!

James Gunn’s DC Studios is getting ready to launch Lanterns, the first TV series focused on Green Lantern within the new DC Universe. It’s one of three projects planned for release in 2026. The show stars Aaron Pierre, Kyle Chandler, and Ulrich Thomsen, and will center around Hal Jordan searching for a successor within the Green Lantern Corps while investigating a mysterious occurrence on Earth. Lanterns is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max in late summer 2026.

What To Expect From DCU Green Lantern Costumes

With the release of Lanterns postponed, fans are eager to see the costumes John Stewart and Hal Jordan will wear as Green Lanterns in the DC Universe. This latest glimpse of Kyle Rayner might offer some hints about the overall design we can expect in the 2026 Green Lantern series.

The new costume will probably feature sharp, modern designs inspired by recent DC comic books, similar to the look of Nathan Fillion’s Superman suit. This will also make the costumes more realistic and less reliant on special effects, avoiding the overly computer-generated appearance of Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern costume from the 2011 film.

With the show’s release now expected in late Summer 2026—possibly July or August—DC Studios might wait until early 2026 to release a full trailer.

With big movie releases featuring Supergirl and Clayface also coming out around the same time, DC may need to get creative with how they promote Lanterns to make sure it stands out when the initial lineup of projects is announced.
