Even after six years, one Star Wars villain stands out as a particularly missed opportunity. Lucasfilm has a history of not fully utilizing its major villains – characters like Captain Phasma, Darth Maul, and Snoke were all promising but ultimately underdeveloped. It’s especially frustrating when talented actors are cast in these roles, only for the characters to fall short of their potential.

But one actor truly made an impact. Six years ago today, December 18, 2025, Giancarlo Esposito first appeared in the Star Wars world as the intimidating Grand Moff Gideon in Season 1, Episode 7 of Disney+’s The Mandalorian. Although other villains in the franchise haven’t quite lived up to their potential, Gideon’s character felt underused throughout his three seasons on the show.

What really sets Moff Gideon apart from villains like Phasma and Snoke is how long he was part of the story. Those characters were removed before viewers had a chance to connect with them. Gideon, on the other hand, started strong but gradually became less impactful over three seasons.

Giancarlo Esposito’s performance in Season 1 of The Mandalorian strongly hinted at a major new villain for the Star Wars universe. His character’s striking armor, reminiscent of Darth Vader, combined with the legendary Dark Saber, created a sense of limitless potential. Many fans anticipated he would become a compelling and iconic adversary, similar to the Joker’s dynamic with Batman.

I was so excited when Giancarlo Esposito, the incredible actor who played Gus Fring in Breaking Bad (seriously, one of the greatest TV villains ever!), was cast before The Mandalorian even came out. For a while, especially in Season 1 when he only showed up in the last couple of episodes, it really seemed like Star Wars fans were going to get to experience that same chilling, intense energy he brought to that role. It felt like we were in for something special!

While Season 2 started strong, Moff Gideon’s storyline lost momentum. The show introduced an interesting plot about his pursuit of Grogu, but didn’t delve into it as much as it could have. There were suggestions that Grogu might be linked to Emperor Palpatine’s return, but Gideon was underused, preventing Giancarlo Esposito from fully showcasing his villainous talent.

I was so let down by what happened to this character in Season 3. He used to be so complex and fascinating, but he just became a convenient villain, existing only to create problems for Din Djarin and Grogu as they traveled from planet to planet. It’s especially frustrating because the actor is incredibly gifted – he’s one of the best of his generation, and he previously brought so much depth and nuance to the role. Seeing him reduced to a simple obstacle felt like a real waste of his talent.

Season 3 of The Mandalorian felt weighed down by its focus on building stories for other parts of the Star Wars universe. This was especially true for Moff Gideon, whose storyline about pursuing Grogu ultimately served to set up the plot for Season 1 of Ahsoka rather than develop his own character. And then, his character was unceremoniously killed off, treated like a minor villain.

It’s disappointing that Star Wars didn’t utilize the talents of an actor like Giancarlo Esposito, especially when they had the chance. Hopefully, Lucasfilm has learned from this and will give actors who express interest in the franchise – like Esposito, known for his role in The Mandalorian – the opportunity to really showcase their skills in the future.

Will Star Wars Ever Redeem Moff Gideon? 

Moff Gideon is likely to be a memorable villain for Star Wars fans for a long time. But it’s worth remembering that the franchise often revisits and tries to fix past mistakes.

Darth Maul is a prime example of a character whose story had unexpected twists. Though initially hailed as a fantastic addition to the Star Wars universe in The Phantom Menace, he was quickly killed off in the same film, much to the disappointment of fans. Fortunately, Maul wasn’t gone for good. He made a popular return in the Clone Wars series, and went on to become a significant and enduring part of the Star Wars story.

Surprisingly, Darth Maul will star in his own animated series, set to premiere in 2026. This is especially notable considering his initial appearance in The Phantom Menace left many thinking he wouldn’t get another major story.

There’s still a chance Giancarlo Esposito’s character from Star Wars could return, as we never actually saw him die. The actor, who previously played Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian, has said he’d be happy to reprise the role if given the chance. In 2024, he suggested that, considering the existence of clones, Moff Gideon could still be out there somewhere, hiding.

Star Wars definitely wants this actor to return, they just need to figure out how to fit him into future projects.

With The Mandalorian continuing as a theatrical film called The Mandalorian & Grogu next year, it appears the story is shifting away from Moff Gideon. Because the film feels like a fresh beginning, it’s unlikely Giancarlo Esposito’s character will be a major part of it.
