Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2, episode 3
While the Great Prophecy seems central to Percy Jackson’s journey, the Disney+ series has subtly highlighted that Annabeth Chase’s backstory is equally important for the upcoming season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The show has hinted at her past, and it will become increasingly significant as the story unfolds.
Even after just three episodes, the show Percy Jackson has made it clear that Annabeth’s past experiences heavily shape who she is today, causing her stress and affecting her choices. Let’s take a closer look at what we’ve learned about her history, especially her relationships with fellow demigods Luke Castellan and Thalia Grace.
Annabeth Was Found By Luke & Thalia When She Was Seven Years Old
Even before Annabeth arrived at Camp Half-Blood, her childhood was difficult. Born a daughter of the goddess Athena, she felt like an outsider and wasn’t accepted by her human family.
The books show Annabeth felt isolated because monsters were attracted to her, causing conflict with her father and stepmother, who worried about the safety of the whole family. This led her to run away at the young age of seven, a detail that’s also been included in the Disney+ series.
Annabeth Chase first met Luke Castellan and Thalia Grace while on the run. They were older and more experienced fighters, and quickly took her under their wing, protecting her from the monsters that constantly pursued them all.
Luke and Thalia were Annabeth’s first teachers, showing her how to fight, stay hidden, and plan strategically – skills she naturally excelled at thanks to being a daughter of Athena. Even more importantly, they became the family she chose. Those early months built Annabeth’s strong sense of loyalty before she even got to Camp Half-Blood, influencing both how easily she forms bonds and how difficult it is for her to let go of them.
Annabeth’s Relationship With Luke & Thalia Explained
Annabeth saw Luke and Thalia as more than just fellow demigods – they were like older siblings, protecting and inspiring her. She greatly admired both of them. Together, the three of them faced constant danger from monsters as they traveled to Camp Half-Blood. Along the way, they met Grover, who became their guide. But just before reaching the camp, they were attacked by a Cyclops.
After a fierce battle, Thalia bravely sacrificed herself to stop a monstrous horse sent by Hades, allowing Luke and Annabeth to escape and reach the safety of Camp Half-Blood.
As seen in the Percy Jackson books, Zeus turned Thalia into a magical tree to guard Camp Half-Blood, effectively stopping time for her. Now, Luke has poisoned that tree, and because he’s working with Kronos to defeat the Olympian gods, Annabeth feels deeply betrayed and is caught in the middle of a major conflict.
Why Annabeth’s Past Matters So Much For Percy Jackson Season 2
Disney/David Bukach
Annabeth’s past relationships with Luke and Thalia are central to her actions in Percy Jackson Season 2. Because Thalia’s destiny is linked to the Golden Fleece, and Annabeth shares a connection to the Great Prophecy as a child of the Big Three – just like Percy – this isn’t just a mission for Annabeth, it’s deeply personal.
Luke is another source of intense emotional conflict. Percy is convinced Luke is beyond redemption and needs to be stopped, but Annabeth still hopes they can save him if they can separate him from Kronos’s influence. Annabeth feels a strong connection to Luke, considering him part of her close-knit group of friends alongside Thalia, and she empathizes with his anger towards his father, Hermes.
Percy views Luke as a serious danger, but Annabeth remembers Luke saving her life multiple times, making his betrayal – especially the poisoning of Thalia’s tree – particularly painful. This creates significant tension between Percy and Annabeth throughout season 2 of Percy Jackson and plays a major role in the unfolding events of The Great Prophecy, alongside the story of Tyson.

Having Percy’s half-brother, Tyson, as a Cyclops adds another layer of difficulty for Annabeth. Though Tyson is kind and tries to help, Annabeth is still affected by a past attack from a Cyclops, an event that ultimately led to the tragic sacrifice of Thalia. It’s taking her time to adjust.
As a huge fan, I think it’s so clear that Annabeth’s backstory is everything in Season 2. We know Percy’s journey will probably decide the fate of Olympus, but honestly, understanding Annabeth’s past is what really helps us understand what’s going on right now with the quest for the Golden Fleece. It explains all the challenges, the friction, and how everyone interacts – it’s the key to everything happening this season!
The Disney+ series can now expand on the conflicts introduced in the original books, and it will be interesting to see how much of the characters’ history is revealed in future episodes.
New episodes of Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 release Wednesdays on Disney+.
