As a history buff, I really appreciate HBO Max’s John Adams. What sets it apart from most war shows is that it doesn’t just focus on the battles themselves. It shows you what life was like before, during, and after the Revolutionary War, giving you a different perspective. A lot of great war shows concentrate on the action, the heroes, and the tough stuff soldiers go through – and that’s cool – but John Adams offers something more than just that.

It’s rare for war stories to focus on the people who aren’t actually fighting. Sometimes, individuals behind the scenes can have a huge impact on the outcome of a war, and often a significant one—for good or bad. The series John Adams introduces us to one of those people, someone many would welcome having on their side.

John Adams Shows The Revolutionary War Through The Eyes Of The Politicians

John Adams is a seven-part miniseries that first aired on HBO Max in 2008. Paul Giamatti plays John Adams, one of America’s Founding Fathers and its second president. The story starts in 1770 with the Boston Massacre, and surprisingly, despite supporting the colonists, Adams chooses to defend the British soldiers in court.

This series offers a unique perspective on the Revolutionary War. Instead of focusing on battles, it shows the political and logistical work that happened behind the scenes, even depicting figures like George Washington primarily at social gatherings and fundraising events. John Adams aims to illustrate the considerable effort required to achieve independence.

John Adams didn’t defend the soldiers involved in the Boston Massacre because he favored them, but because he believed his new nation should prioritize justice and impartiality over revenge. He achieved this goal even while serving as an ambassador to France and England, despite not seeming naturally suited to the position.

Although we haven’t experienced battles like Bunker Hill, Cowpens, or Yorktown firsthand, the spirit of the Revolutionary War feels ever-present. Even while John Adams is in France, far from the fighting, he’s consumed with urging the French to help, revealing a constant state of wartime concern. This intense focus on the war is something we rarely see portrayed, even in well-made shows like Band of Brothers.

HBO adapted another David McCullough Book For Television

As a history buff and film enthusiast, I was really excited to check out John Adams. It’s based on the incredible biography of the same name by David McCullough, who’s a huge deal – he’s actually won two Pulitzer Prizes, and one of them was specifically for this John Adams book, recognizing it as a top-notch biography.

A key part of David McCullough’s research was the discovery of letters exchanged between John Adams and his wife, Abigail, who is portrayed by Laura Linney in the miniseries. These letters formed the foundation for how their relationship is depicted on screen.

I’m a big fan of David McCullough, and it’s fantastic to see his work getting the HBO treatment! It’s not just John Adams – his biography of Harry Truman was also turned into a really compelling TV movie back in 1995. What I love about both adaptations is that they really pull back the curtain and show you what was happening behind the scenes during wartime – it makes history feel so much more real.
