If you’re looking forward to season 2 of Task, the crime thriller Long Bright River should hold you over in the meantime. Task was a major success in 2025, and HBO Max has confirmed it will return, though a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
I just finished watching Task, and it really stuck with me. It’s a tough watch – it deals with a child abduction – but what’s fascinating is how it shows the people on both sides of the investigation, the cops and the abductors, and how surprisingly similar their motivations can be. Mark Ruffalo, Tom Pelphrey, and Emilia Jones all give great performances. If you’re into this kind of intense, character-driven drama, I think you’d also really like Long Bright River over on Peacock.
What Is Long Bright River?
Long Bright River is a 2025 crime drama miniseries adapted from Liz Moore’s 2020 novel. Amanda Seyfried stars as Mickey Fitzpatrick, a police officer in Philadelphia who patrols Kensington, the neighborhood where she spent her childhood – and a known hotspot for crime.
Mickey is investigating the murders of three women in her neighborhood, a case that hits close to home because her sister vanished weeks ago. Each time she finds a victim, she’s haunted by the fear that it might be her sister.
Growing up with hardship and danger has made Mickey wary of most people, except for her grandfather and her ex, Truman Dawes. She isn’t afraid of challenges, though – whether it’s navigating the city of Kensington or tracking down a fugitive, she’s determined to get the job done.
Long Bright River And Task Are Set In The Same Location And Deal With Missing Family Members
If you enjoyed Task and are looking for something similar, Long Bright River is a great choice. Both shows take place in the Philadelphia area and focus on the city’s most impoverished neighborhoods, exploring how difficult circumstances can lead people towards crime and drug use as a means of survival.
Both shows realistically portray the distinctive personalities of people living in and around Philadelphia. They also share a common theme: missing family members. In Task, the focus is on relatives who have either passed away or been incarcerated, while Long Bright River centers on Mickey’s sister who has run away.
What really stands out is the consistently dark mood of these shows, though they’re balanced with occasional bits of humor and hope that keep viewers engaged, even with the high body count. While Long Bright River might not be quite as gripping as Task, it still offers plenty to enjoy for fans of crime dramas.
