Sony’s Labubu Movie Taps Wonka Director

Sony Pictures is continuing to develop a movie based on the popular toy brand, Labubu. Paul King, the director known for Paddington and Wonka, is expected to direct, bringing a strong creative vision to the project.

Paul King to direct Sony’s Labubu Movie

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures has chosen Paul King to direct a movie based on Labubu, the popular designer toy. While the project is still in its early stages, King’s participation is a significant step forward since Sony acquired the rights to bring Labubu to the big screen earlier this year.

Paul King, the director of Paddington and Wonka, is producing the film alongside Department M and Wenxin She. The production will also work with Pop Mart, the company behind the popular Labubu brand. They haven’t hired a writer or announced when filming will begin yet.

Labubu started as a collectible toy designed by artist Kasing Lung. It was first made by How2 Work, but in 2019, Pop Mart began producing and selling it. Pop Mart’s unique ‘blind box’ sales method significantly boosted Labubu’s popularity, creating high demand and a thriving resale market. The brand gained even more attention when K-pop star Lisa from Blackpink featured it.

Sony bought the rights to make a movie based on Labubu back in November. They’re still deciding if it will be a live-action film with real actors or an animated movie, and haven’t announced any of the cast yet.

As a big movie fan, I’m really excited about this project knowing Paul King is involved. He’s got a fantastic track record – he directed both Paddington movies, which were brilliant, and then more recently, Wonka, which did really well in theaters. I’m keeping an eye out for more news on how the Labubu adaptation is coming along as things develop.
