Avatar Cast Reveals Desired Pandora Biomes and Na’vi Clans for Future Films

With the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash, James Cameron’s popular sci-fi series continues, and the actors involved are already thinking about the future of Pandora. As the Avatar films introduce new environments, cultures, and groups – like the Ash People in Fire and Ash – the cast members have shared their hopes for where the story could go next.

As a huge Avatar fan, I’ve really loved seeing all the different Na’vi clans they’ve shown us on Pandora. We first met the Omaticaya, who live in the forests, in the first movie. Then, The Way of Water introduced the Metkayina, a clan that’s all about life in the reefs. Now, in Avatar: Fire and Ash, it looks like we’re getting the Mangkwan Clan, who seem to be connected to fire, and led by a new villain named Varang, played by Oona Chaplin. It’s great to see even more of Pandora’s cultures!

I recently chatted with the cast of Avatar: Fire and Ash over at ScreenRant, and we got to talking about where they’d love to see the Avatar universe go next. We specifically discussed what kinds of environments – think different landscapes and climates – and Na’vi cultures they’d be most excited to explore in future Avatar movies. It was fascinating to hear their ideas!

Bailey Bass enjoys working with the Tlalim clan, describing the experience as incredibly exciting. She feels they’re adding a lot of depth to the story and is eager to see how the character Jim continues to discover the world of Pandora, emphasizing the vastness of the planet itself.

Trinity Jo-Li Bliss says the recent movies have only begun to scratch the surface of Pandora’s potential, introducing fascinating characters and locations. She’s thrilled about the possibilities for future installments and how much more of the world they can explore.

Building on what Bailey said, I’m a big fan of the Wind Traders. I think their culture is really interesting – they’re like Na’vi pirates! As far as I know, they’re the only Na’vi who all wear ponchos.

These ships have crossbows, and they’re steered by enormous jellyfish – it’s really amazing! Being part of this group means you’d get to see all kinds of environments, since they’re constantly traveling.

Sam Worthington says Pandora is a vast world, and the only limit to what’s possible is director James Cameron’s creativity. He also notes that parts of Pandora can get quite cold.

Stephen Lang: I think that there are some polar areas, probably, in Pandora.

Oona Chaplin suggests the story could take place in a desert environment, or anywhere really. She believes anything is possible, and the setting will depend on the needs of the narrative.

The Na’vi people in the movie are based on cultures from around the world. The Na’vi language, with over 2,600 words, was created by linguist Paul Frommer, who drew inspiration from Indigenous languages. There are more than 20 different Na’vi clans living on the planet Pandora, and each one has developed its own unique customs and traditions based on where they live.

We’ve learned about the different Na’vi clans through various sources, including movies, video games, live shows, and Avatar‘s official website’s field guide to Pandora, called The Pandaropedia. Here’s a look at the 20 clans we know about so far:

Toma’ta The Pandorapedia A Na’vi tribe that’s only mentioned briefly and has yet to appear properly.
Olangi Avatar A nomadic, plains-based tribe of Na’vi horseriders.

The next Avatar movie will jump forward eight years, which will significantly change Pandora and allow the story to naturally introduce new clans and develop the existing characters and world. The Tlalim clan, also known as the Wind Traders, who were briefly seen in the previous film, are particularly interesting. They offer a way to showcase different parts of Pandora, including new environments and cultures, which aligns with James Cameron’s vision of a connected world within the Avatar franchise.

Instead of simplifying the story, the Avatar series continues to grow, portraying Pandora as a vibrant, ever-evolving world full of potential. With Avatar: Fire and Ash exploring more complex themes, the actors are eager to further explore Pandora, hinting that the most impressive and thought-provoking installments of the franchise are yet to come.
