The upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, will bring back many familiar faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with reports suggesting Chris Evans will reprise his role as Captain America. However, this exciting news might actually hurt another major Marvel film.
For a long time, there have been rumors that Chris Evans would return as Captain America (Steve Rogers). Now, those rumors are confirmed by teaser trailers released with the movie Avatar: Fire and Ash. The trailers reveal Steve Rogers will indeed be appearing in Avengers: Doomsday.
It’s unclear how significant Chris Evans’ role will be in the new Avengers film, but his appearance is unexpected. His character’s story seemed to have concluded with the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame, and this new involvement now casts that ending in a different, and somewhat problematic, light.
How Chris Evans’ MCU return could harm Avengers: Endgame
Released in 2019, Avengers: Endgame was designed to be the epic conclusion to ten years of Marvel Cinematic Universe stories. The film featured a massive showdown with Thanos and also served as a farewell to several original cast members, like Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., and Scarlett Johansson.
In essence, Chris Evans’ Captain America steps down, giving his shield to Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie. Instead of continuing as a superhero, Steve Rogers goes back in time to finally live a life with Peggy Carter, a chance he’d always missed. The ending provided Rogers with a satisfying conclusion, leading many to believe Evans had permanently retired from the role.
Beyond its emotional impact, Avengers: Endgame was a huge commercial hit, earning nearly $2.8 billion worldwide and briefly becoming the highest-grossing movie ever. It effectively concluded a major chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and paved the way for future stories.
Recently, things have become uncertain. Chris Evans is reprising his role as Steve Rogers, and Robert Downey Jr. is returning as Victor Von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom. There are also rumors of other familiar faces joining the cast of ‘Doomsday,’ seemingly as an attempt to revitalize the Marvel Cinematic Universe after some recent films haven’t performed as well at the box office.
Even if Chris Evans doesn’t officially become Captain America again, his appearance in the movie will definitely thrill fans. He’s incredibly popular in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Marvel Studios anticipated a strong reaction to his return. However, bringing him back might have weakened the impact of his character’s original, emotional ending, making it feel less meaningful after all these years.
