George R.R. Martin shared his surprised reaction after visiting the set of the new HBO series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a prequel to Game of Thrones. The show, which will debut on January 18, 2026, is based on Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg stories, bringing them to the screen more than twenty years after they were first published.
A recent post on the official Game of Thrones X account shows author George R.R. Martin visiting the set of the new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The footage includes Martin meeting the actors playing Dunk and Egg, Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell. He shared his excitement about seeing characters and locations from his books brought to life, and complimented the show’s high production values.
Wow, it’s like stepping into the past! Walking onto the set feels exactly like entering the world of my book.
The new Game of Thrones spinoff’s actors emphasize how crucial George R.R. Martin’s input has been during the adaptation process. Rhiannon Claffey specifically expressed being “incredibly appreciative” that Martin allowed them to portray these characters, and the author shared his fondness for the central pair in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Peter and Dexter were just fantastic characters, and I’m really excited that Dunk and Egg are being created. I think a lot of people will enjoy them as much as I do.
George R.R. Martin, the creator of the world of Game of Thrones, has been closely involved with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, especially as the show gets ready to launch. This involvement is particularly noteworthy because Martin recently voiced some criticisms of House of the Dragon, HBO’s other Game of Thrones prequel, after its second season aired in 2024, suggesting he’s taking a more active role in this new series.
Despite stepping back from day-to-day involvement, Martin is still working with HBO on future Game of Thrones spin-offs. Besides the already-announced second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and seasons three and four of House of the Dragon, a prequel series about Aegon’s Conquest – focusing on King Aegon I Targaryen’s rise to power – is now officially in development.
I’ve been following the updates on the Aegon’s Conquest series, and it’s so exciting to hear that George R.R. Martin is collaborating with Mattson Tomlin! We’re all still waiting to find out when it might actually get the go-ahead and start filming, but right now, I’m completely focused on the upcoming premiere of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. I’ve been anticipating Dunk and Egg’s story for ages, and I can’t wait to finally see it brought to life on screen!
