James Gunn’s take on Superman, titled Superman, has certainly left a strong impact. The first film in DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters is raking in great box office numbers, but it’s also gathering acclaim for its stellar cast. David Corenswet heads the Superman ensemble, but he’s not the only one who stands out. Rachel Brosnahan, playing Lois Lane, is equally impressive. Interestingly enough, before seeing Brosnahan’s outstanding audition, Corenswet thought another actress would get the role.
It’s fair to say that the success of much of the Superman storyline hinges on the chemistry between the actors portraying Clark Kent and Lois Lane. James Gunn had a challenging task, as he needed to audition many candidates for these roles and even conduct screen tests. While visiting the set of this superhero film, TopMob interviewed David Corenswet, who fondly recalled the casting process. He specifically mentioned working with an actress from the Barbie series, who was nearly cast as the sharp and lively Daily Planet reporter.
Rachel and I shared a reading session together once. I collaborated with Emma Mackey on four or five read-throughs for several hours, rehearsing together. She is an exceptional actress, truly gifted. During our collaboration, we prepared for the screen test and filmed the scene we practiced – a scene similar to one in the movie – for about two hours, as if it were a real movie scene. Following this, I underwent a stunt evaluation… Afterward, almost as an additional requirement, they asked me to read with Rachel. At that time, Rachel was functioning on no sleep. She had just flown from Broadway to L.A. the previous night on a red-eye flight and had arrived early in the morning for work with Nick Holt.

In 2023, there were rumors that Emma Mackey was being considered for the role of DCU’s Lois Lane. Not only was she a popular choice among fans as more details about the movie (originally titled “Superman: Legacy”) surfaced, but Mackey showed great promise as an up-and-coming actress. However, it seemed that Rachel Brosnahan had already been cast for the role, according to David Corenswet’s account of their audition.
We shared a reading session once, and it moved swiftly, almost like a blur. Frankly, I can’t recall much from that time as my mind seemed preoccupied, and I believe we both felt that we had more chances to read together. So, during our initial encounter, you were mainly taking in the scene and adjusting to each other’s paces. When they commented, ‘Alright, cool, that’s great,’ I wished for a few more opportunities. However, it seems that James and others noticed a unique intersection of two distinct energies and acting styles at that precise moment, which they found intriguing.

In time, what transpired became a significant part of cinematic lore, as Rachel Brosnahan received the call (during a bathroom break) confirming her casting role. During our recent visit to the set, we had the pleasure of speaking with the actress herself, who shared that she initially struggled to understand the character. According to Brosnahan, it was during her first day of filming alongside David Corenswet – who equally captivated her with his performance – that she finally found a connection with the role. Here’s how the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel stardesscribed the experience.
In many instances, I find myself unsure about a person until they step into action for the initial scene. Despite all the preparation, rehearsals, costume adjustments, and makeup trials, it’s not until the director shouts “Action” on that first take that you can only hope everything we’ve worked on is evident and effective.
On our first day of filming, we shot an extensive scene – nearly 10 pages long. It was quite a rollercoaster to complete the day and realize we had filmed approximately one-tenth of the movie. We plunged right into the deep end; there was no gentle introduction or close-ups of the character in the background. Instead, it was a scene that demanded attention, and I believe after that first day, David and I both felt, “We’re all in!
As I embarked on the challenging mission of casting the latest versions of Lois and Clark, I recognized the immense responsibility that lay ahead. However, my hard work appears to be bearing fruit, as the critical acclaim pouring in for Superman suggests. The actors had an arduous task, particularly Rachel Brosnahan who follows in the footsteps of esteemed actresses like Margot Kidder and Amy Adams. Now, with a promising future ahead, Brosnahan stands poised to play Lois for many years, and I’m excited about the boundless potential her character has for growth and development.
The movie starring Superman is currently showing across the country. As the DC Universe begins its journey, keep yourself updated on future DC films.
