With Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) now merged, James Gunn’s role leading the DC Universe is secure. The entertainment industry is constantly evolving, and Netflix’s acquisition of WBD initially created uncertainty about the future of projects Gunn had planned for the DCU. However, those projects are now confirmed to move forward.
Netflix has assured everyone that Warner Bros. Discovery won’t be making significant changes to its staff after the acquisition is finalized. According to Netflix, both companies will continue operating separately, with their existing teams in place. Netflix highlighted its own contributions to job creation and the U.S. economy, and expressed optimism about achieving even greater results with Warner Bros. Discovery as part of the same organization.
Netflix and Warner Bros. have businesses that work well together, so we intend to keep them running separately with their existing teams. We’ll continue investing in new movies and shows and increase our production capabilities in the U.S. In the past four years, we’ve added over $125 billion to the U.S. economy and employed more than 140,000 people on film and TV sets across the country. Bringing Warner Bros. into the mix will allow us to accomplish even more.
Recently, as news of the merger surfaced, it appeared James Gunn’s DC Studios would continue operating as usual. This suggests both Gunn and his co-CEO, Peter Safran, will keep their current roles, and their plans for the DC Universe will move forward without changes.
Okay, so DC has one final movie planned for late 2025 before James Gunn and Peter Safran really start rolling out their vision. They’ve got a ton of stuff in the works, split into these ‘Elseworlds’ and ‘Gods and Monsters’ plans. We already know for sure that Supergirl is hitting theaters on June 26th, 2026, and then Lanterns will be streaming on HBO Max sometime late summer that same year. I’m really excited to see where they’re taking these characters!
What to Expect From James Gunn’s DCU After Netflix/WBD Merger

Recent reports suggest James Gunn and his team are secure in their positions and continuing with their current plans. The main question now is how the two companies will work together now that they share the same owner.
James Gunn’s planned DC movies will still come out in theaters as scheduled. However, Netflix will now be able to stream content alongside HBO Max. At least six DC shows are confirmed to premiere on HBO Max starting in 2026, and more are planned for 2027 and later.
The merger probably won’t affect already-planned HBO Max shows, as Netflix could still release them on that platform when they’re finished. But Netflix is already strong with its own original content, and now it will also have access to all of DC’s popular characters – both heroes and villains.
Netflix is exploring opportunities to grow its streaming service by creating original content, potentially becoming a new home for DC stories. They might develop projects specifically for Netflix, or for both Netflix and other platforms. While no firm decisions have been made regarding the future of DC properties on Netflix, James Gunn and Peter Safran will be leading these efforts and guiding the new direction.
