James Gunn Reveals How Supergirl’s Dark Past Sets Her Apart from Superman in the DCU!

In a recent chat, filmmaker James Gunn hinted that Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El (Supergirl) will have distinct traits from David Corenswet’s Clark Kent (Superman) within the DC Universe (DCU). While Superman debuted on July 11, 2025, Supergirl is set to be the second film in the series, both being part of the first chapter of DCU: Gods and Monsters.

James Gunn explains Supergirl’s different origins from Superman

In the final scenes of 2025’s Superman, Milly Alcock unexpectedly makes an appearance as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl. Upon entering the Fortress of Solitude to retrieve Krypto, who she had entrusted to Superman temporarily, she seems intoxicated.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can’t help but notice how distinctively unique this portrayal of Supergirl feels compared to Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman. In an interview with ScreenRant, James Gunn openly acknowledged that the current interpretation of Supergirl in the DC Universe is quite a puzzle. He further emphasized that this version of the character will indeed be gracing our screens in Craig Gillespie’s upcoming adaptation of Supergirl.

In other words, while Superman grew up with a loving and wholesome background, the character Gunn is referring to has had a vastly different, more challenging upbringing. As a result, they have turned out differently from their cousin.

The fact that Superman comes from a distinct background was possibly suggested by the entire content of the message his biological parents, Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van, left for him before he was sent to Earth. At first, Clark Kent found motivation in the initial part of the damaged message.

Initially, it seemed that he had been sent to Earth with peaceful intentions, but later it was unveiled that his mission was to conquer the planet and revive the Kryptonian race by forming alliances. Despite this shocking truth, Clark drew strength from his upbringing as a simple Kansas farmer’s child. Given her background on Krypton, it is understandable that Kara, who knew life only on her native planet before departing, would perceive things differently from Clark.

DCU’s Supergirl debuts in US theaters on June 26, 2026.
