Tom Cruise Space Movie Allegedly Collapsed Because He Refused to Ask President Trump for Help

Tom Cruise, famous for doing his own dangerous stunts in the Mission: Impossible movies, is apparently avoiding any connection with the Trump administration. Because of this, a planned movie project that would have sent him to space has been cancelled.

According to a source who spoke with Page Six, filming the movie would require approval from NASA and the federal government. Apparently, Tom Cruise was hesitant to ask Donald Trump for help with getting that permission.

Hollywood and NASA

In May 2020, Deadline announced that Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman were collaborating on a groundbreaking film project. Having previously worked together on American Made and Edge of Tomorrow, Cruise and Liman were excited about the possibility of filming a movie in space. Deadline reported that Liman initially wrote the first draft of the screenplay.

Despite seeming far-fetched, the idea of filming an action movie in space gained some traction. The project would have needed cooperation from both SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, and NASA. In 2020, NASA’s administrator at the time, Jim Bridenstine, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that NASA was enthusiastic about collaborating with Tom Cruise on a film shot on the International Space Station. Bridenstine explained that popular media like this could inspire the next generation of engineers and scientists to help NASA achieve its goals.

Since leaving NASA, Bridenstine has entered the private sector. Sources speaking with Page Six say the potential movie project with Tom Cruise hasn’t been talked about further within the agency. Both Cruise’s team and NASA have not offered any official statements on the matter.

Cruise Avoids Politics

Tom Cruise has generally avoided taking public stances on political issues throughout his career. When asked about Donald Trump’s proposed taxes on films made overseas last May at a press event for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning in Seoul, Cruise politely steered the conversation back to the movie, saying, “We’d rather answer questions about the movie. Thank you.”

Tom Cruise surprised many people in August by turning down a Kennedy Center honor. While his team said it was due to scheduling issues, many believed the real reason was that Donald Trump was hosting the event, and Cruise didn’t want to accept an award from him.

To film a movie in space, Tom Cruise needed approval from then-President Trump, not just a commendation. According to a source at Page Six, Cruise avoided asking for help due to political considerations.

Other Complexities

Since Cruise, the White House, and NASA haven’t made any official statements, everything we’re hearing is just guesswork. Claiming the project was cancelled simply because Tom Cruise didn’t ask the president for help ignores the many challenges involved in making a movie.

There are many reasons why movies get canceled, and filming a project with Tom Cruise and Doug Liman in space presented huge challenges. Beyond the complex planning, it was difficult to find insurance for such a first-of-its-kind endeavor, and the ages of the cast and crew were also a factor.

Whether politics played a role, or Tom Cruise is just safeguarding his public reputation, the truth will probably remain a mystery.
