Christina Ricci’s Guns Up Is Blowing Up on Streaming

Fans of the John Wick movies don’t need to wait for the fifth film to see more action. The new series seems to be very popular with Paramount+ viewers.

The movie, released in theaters in July, remained popular on the streaming service’s daily top 10 list in the U.S. this week, reaching number five on December 15th, according to FlixPatrol. While it’s no longer among the most popular movies in the U.S. as of December 16th, Guns Up is still performing well internationally. It currently ranks sixth on Amazon Prime’s top 10 lists in both the Dominican Republic and Guatemala, and has climbed to fourth place in Uruguay.

While Guns Up is popular on streaming services, reviews have been mixed. On Rotten Tomatoes, viewers give it a 76% rating, but critics are less enthusiastic, with a score of only 61%. Some, like Linda Marric from HeyUGuys, praised the film and particularly Daniel James’ performance as Ray Hayes, calling it a win, while others, such as Peter Sobczynski, found the story unconvincing.

In a review for RogerEbert.com, the critic gave Guns Up half a star, describing it as a strange mix of John Wick and Paul Blart: Mall Cop. He explained that the biggest issue with the film is that it asks viewers to take its premise seriously, but the movie simply doesn’t allow for that.

The film Guns Up received mixed reviews, and that seemed to affect how many people bought tickets. Box Office Mojo reports the movie only earned $252,865 worldwide, though its production budget is unknown.

Despite Its Divisive Response, Filming Guns Up Was Memorable For Both James and his Co-star, Christina Ricci

Following the release of the summer film Guns Up, Christina Ricci discussed learning knife-fighting for her role. She said becoming physically prepared for the part was difficult, even though she’s a long-time enthusiast of action movies.

Shortly after the movie came out, the actress said she’s a big fan of action films and had always hoped to star in more of them. She worked hard to learn the fight choreography, practicing extensively with a prop dagger until she felt comfortable with it.

I made a lot of mistakes during filming, but it was a really enjoyable experience. As someone who doesn’t usually participate in physical altercations, I quickly realized how tiring fight scenes are! Even after just two minutes of fighting, you’re completely drained. Since I’m not in great shape, it was also a really tough physical challenge.

James admitted Ricci made some early errors, but he was really impressed by her physical ability. He described the filming of the action scenes as tough, saying he often wished he could direct from a chair and needed a long break afterward. However, Ricci was like a natural, handling everything with ease and surprising everyone with her skills.

Guns Up is currently available to stream on Paramount+.
