Beauty And The Beast’s Gaston Is Getting His Own Movie, And I’m So Confused By What’s Being Planned

Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast, which came out eight years ago and starred Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, and Luke Evans, was a huge financial success, earning $1.26 billion worldwide. Despite attempts to build on that success with sequels or spin-offs, none materialized. Now, news has surfaced that a movie focusing on the villain Gaston is in development, and Disney’s approach to the project seems unclear.

Deadline reports that Dave Callaham is now writing the screenplay for a movie centered around Gaston, after Kate Herron and Briony Redman previously worked on a draft. Michelle Rejwan is producing, though a director hasn’t been found yet. Interestingly, Luke Evans won’t be returning as Gaston, despite initial plans for him to reprise the role in a cancelled prequel series. This new film will instead feature a fresh take on the character, telling a more adventurous and action-packed story.

Okay, so I’m hearing this new Gaston movie won’t have anything to do with the 2017 Beauty and the Beast film, and honestly, that feels like a misstep to me. I get that it’s been a while – almost ten years! – and yes, Gaston died in both the original animated movie and the live-action one. But the 2017 film wasn’t bad, and Luke Evans was a pretty great Gaston. Disney would’ve been smarter to build on that success, maybe even continuing with a prequel format. It just feels like they’re starting from scratch when they already had a solid foundation.

Perhaps more significantly, isn’t Disney fundamentally changing what makes Gaston, Gaston, by trying to rehabilitate his image? His flaws – his narrow-mindedness, arrogance, and vanity – are precisely what make him such an effective villain in Beauty and the Beast. Essentially, turning him into a hero would be like creating an entirely new character.

I’m curious about the story’s direction. Is it a reimagining of Beauty and the Beast told from Gaston’s point of view? Or is it a completely new story, perhaps without Belle, or using her in a significantly different way? It’s unclear what inspired this project, but according to Deadline, the studio seems very enthusiastic about it.

It remains to be seen whether the planned live-action Gaston movie will actually be made, or if it will get stuck in development. Before that, Disney’s live-action remake of Moana is scheduled to release on July 10, 2026.
