James Gunn leads creative development for DC Films, but he also spends a lot of time correcting false rumors about his projects. He’s especially frustrated with the recent, inaccurate speculation surrounding his upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow.
The biggest casting speculation about the next DC movies centers around who will play the villain, and many believe it will be the classic Superman foe, Brainiac. A recent rumor suggested James Gunn is considering Dave Bautista, who starred in Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, as his top pick for the role. However, Gunn quickly addressed the rumor on Threads, stating:
Okay, let me clarify – I never confirmed Dave Bautista was going to be in the movie. I’m a big fan of his and have thought about potential roles for him in the DC Universe, but we’ve never talked about him being in ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ nor have we discussed it with anyone at DC. Also, to be clear, none of the actors people are speculating about have even auditioned or been considered for the role.
James Gunn doesn’t confirm or deny whether Brainiac will appear, keeping that possibility alive. However, he firmly states that Dave Bautista will not be playing the role, and suggests that most other rumors surrounding the film, Man of Tomorrow, are also inaccurate.
Rumors about who might play Brainiac aren’t new, and some reports even mentioned Matt Smith and Sam Rockwell as potential candidates. While James Gunn hasn’t confirmed or denied these claims, it’s probably safe to assume they weren’t seriously considered, as he’s stated these actors weren’t involved in discussions or auditions.
Dave Bautista would actually be a pretty good fit for the role of Brainiac, or really any villain in a Superman movie. Even James Gunn admits the idea has some merit, though he’s mostly annoyed by it because he’s already friends with Bautista. Gunn then went on to say…
I usually ignore ridiculous rumors, and this one isn’t even the strangest I’ve encountered lately. However, because Dave is a friend, it’s particularly annoying. I don’t think the person who posted this is the source – it’s likely coming from somewhere else. 🧜♂️
There’s a good chance Dave Bautista will appear in the DC Universe eventually, as he and the filmmakers seem to enjoy working together. Casting him as Brainiac wouldn’t be a bad choice, but fans should be realistic. While someone will likely play Brainiac, it might not be Bautista – the role could go to an actor we haven’t even considered yet.
