James Gunn clarifies Brainiac’s Man of Tomorrow casting rumors

James Gunn recently clarified rumors about Brainiac’s casting, stating he’s never spoken with Dave Bautista about the role.

The director of Guardians of the Galaxy clarified a previous statement, saying he never claimed Dave Bautista was cast in a movie. He expressed his admiration for Bautista and shared that he has several ideas for roles Bautista could play within the DC Universe. However, they’ve never discussed any specific role in a potential ‘Man of Tomorrow’ project, nor have they talked about it within DC Studios.

Gunn also clarified that while Dave Bautista isn’t currently expected to play Brainiac in the upcoming Superman film, other actors previously rumored for the role aren’t being considered either. He stated that none of the six or seven actors he’s seen mentioned online have even been auditioned or discussed for the part.

Several established actors were early favorites to play Brainiac in the new DC Universe, including Claes Bang, Matt Smith, and Sam Rockwell. There were even rumors that Claes Bang did a screen test for the role.

Despite all the rumors, James Gunn has dismissed them as false. He stated that while he usually doesn’t respond to silly speculation, this particular rumor bothered him more because it involved a friend, Dave.

Man of Tomorrow is currently on track to come out in theaters on July 9, 2027.
