Percy Jackson’s Great Prophecy Will Be Different Than The Books, But That’s A Good Thing

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Percy Jackson & The Olympians season 2, episodes 1-2

Season 2 of Percy Jackson & The Olympians will introduce ‘The Great Prophecy,’ a key storyline from the first five books by Rick Riordan. However, the show will make some changes as it adapts the story for television.

The first season of Percy Jackson (The Lightning Thief) came out in 2023, and the second season (Sea of Monsters) was released at the end of 2025. Because of the gap between seasons, people are naturally discussing how the show will handle The Great Prophecy and how it will affect the timeline, especially considering how old Percy Jackson is supposed to be.

The first five books of the series center around a specific deadline: Percy Jackson’s sixteenth birthday. This creates a sense of urgency and drives the plot, as it’s believed a child of one of the three major gods – Zeus, Poseidon, or Hades – will either save or destroy Olympus on that day.

The first episodes of Percy Jackson season 2 are starting to reveal the Great Prophecy, originally delivered by the Oracle of Delphi during World War II. This prophecy explains why the powerful Big Three gods made a seventy-year-old agreement not to have any children – an agreement that has now been broken.

I just learned from Annabeth that Chiron told her the real reason why Percy shouldn’t go on this quest. Apparently, it all comes down to a prophecy – something about retrieving the Golden Fleece from Polyphemus, the cyclops. They haven’t told Percy the full story yet, but Annabeth knows it’s a big deal and why this quest could be dangerous.

Interestingly, Rick Riordan – who is also a producer and writer for the show – has hinted at a significant change to the storyline of ‘The Great Prophecy’. He’s mentioned that the show won’t focus as heavily on the demigod’s sixteenth birthday as the book does.

How The Prophecy Will Likely Be Changed For Percy Jackson’s Disney+ Show

Rick Riordan recently told The Wrap that he’s taking advantage of some built-in flexibility in the Great Prophecy. This will allow the show to move away from needing Percy to turn sixteen on a very specific date.

Riordan explained that the prophecy doesn’t specifically state the events will occur on a character’s sixteenth birthday. It simply says they need to reach sixteen, and then things will start happening. He feels they have some flexibility with this detail, meaning the events can occur sometime after the birthday, rather than on it, giving them more creative freedom.

This approach could be a clever way to deal with the issue of actors aging, something that’s been a challenge for shows like Stranger Things. Considering Percy Jackson actor Walker Scobell is only 16 this year, it allows for more flexibility as the series progresses.

Given everything we know, it will be fascinating to see if the show changes the exact words of the Great Prophecy in the rest of Percy Jackson season 2, or in the already-approved third season which will cover The Titan’s Curse.

New episodes of Percy Jackson & The Olympians season 2 release Wednesdays on Disney+.
