With its impact on streaming television, the ending of The Boys is hugely important. Season 5 needs to wrap up the main conflicts – the war between Vought and the Boys, and the personal fight between Homelander and Butcher. Key storylines include figuring out where Ryan’s loyalties lie, uncovering Sister Sage’s plan, and deciding the fate of the supe virus – will it be unleashed or eliminated?
To prevent a disappointing ending like the final season of Game of Thrones, The Boys needs to steer clear of predictable and frustrating TV clichés – things like shocking twists that don’t make sense, revealing events were just a dream, or focusing on sentimental friendships instead of the main plot. While most of these tropes haven’t been an issue for the show, the trailer for season 5 confirms that one potential pitfall has been successfully avoided.
The Boys Season 5 Avoids A Tedious Opening
Wow, the end of The Boys season 4 left me completely stunned! Seeing Hughie, MM, Frenchie, and Kimiko get taken by Vought and Homelander’s crew was a really shocking moment. It feels like things are truly desperate now, heading into the final season. And honestly, it made Homelander seem even more dangerous and like he’s really taking control – it’s terrifying!
This situation presented a tricky problem for season 5. While the escape of the four Boys members from Vought’s holding facilities could fuel a good portion of the story, having four episodes focused on them being stuck in cells wouldn’t be a very exciting way to start the show’s final season.
It would also be a shame to not utilize the actors. The show’s title, The Boys, emphasizes that the story centers on the core group – Butcher, Hughie, M.M., Kimiko, Frenchie, and Starlight. Having them scattered across the country in a final season wouldn’t be a satisfying conclusion. It would be much better to see the team reunited for as much of season 5 as possible, continuing their chaotic adventures.
Fortunately, that’s what the new trailer for The Boys season 5 reveals. We see Hughie held in one of Vought’s facilities, but Starlight manages to rescue him, and the two are quickly back with the rest of the team. Most of the trailer footage focuses on all six heroes working together, which is great to see.
Considering how much of the trailer shows the Boys together, and the fact that Prime Video revealed Starlight saving Hughie, it looks like major events will happen quickly this season. They wouldn’t highlight these moments in the trailer if they weren’t coming up soon. It’s probable we’ll see the whole team reunited before the first season 5 episodes are finished.
Gen V Season 2 Proved A Quick Breakout Can Work
The first and second seasons of Gen V followed a similar pattern. The first season ended with the main characters being captured and locked up by Vought.
Instead of starting season 2 with drawn-out scenes of the characters in jail, Gen V immediately moved things forward by having everyone released. Marie had already escaped before the season began, and while Andre’s escape attempt was unsuccessful, Emma and Jordan were back at Godolkin University by the first episode. This allowed the new season’s story to start quickly, and viewers never felt like they missed important events that happened while the characters were imprisoned.
The same approach applies to season 5 of The Boys. Finishing early character-focused episodes allows the show to quickly re-establish the strong relationships viewers love – which is especially important knowing we don’t have many seasons left with these characters.
