Matt Smith has hinted at the return date for House of the Dragon. The show, a prequel to the popular series Game of Thrones, finished its second season in August 2024, and production on the next season will take a significant amount of time due to its complex storyline. House of the Dragon tells the story of the Targaryen family when they were at their most powerful, and features many dragons.
Matt Smith, who plays Prince Daemon Targaryen on House of the Dragon, recently shared in an interview with This Morning that he believes the show’s third season will likely premiere in August 2026. He specifically stated he thinks it will be released “in August next year.” Last season, his character fully committed to helping Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) claim the Iron Throne.
Though it’s started slowly and tested some viewers’ patience, House of the Dragon is predicted to deliver the large-scale battles of the Dance of Dragons – a major war in George R. R. Martin’s world – in its third season. The show, a prequel to Game of Thrones set nearly 200 years earlier, centers on the turmoil that arises when King Viserys Targaryen (played by Paddy Considine) chooses his daughter as his successor.
After Viserys remarries and has more sons, Rhaenyra’s claim to the throne is questioned when he dies, and many people support her brother Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) as the rightful ruler. With nominations for Golden Globe and Emmy awards over its two seasons, House of the Dragon has been a hit, especially after the divisive final season of Game of Thrones.
The first season of House of the Dragon was a critical success, even winning a Golden Globe for Best Drama Series – something the original Game of Thrones never accomplished. This positive response has led HBO to greenlight another prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is scheduled to debut in January 2026.
The first season of House of the Dragon premiered in 2022, and the second season is expected around August 2026, though extra time for editing might be needed due to increased battle scenes. Good news for fans: House of the Dragon has already been renewed for a fourth season, and a second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is also confirmed.
The upcoming season of House of the Dragon will feature strong performances from Olivia Cooke, Rhys Ifans, and others, and will delve deeper into how the noble families of Westeros become fully embroiled in the civil war they previously seemed to be avoiding.
