Andy Serkis’ New Adaptation Of 80-Year-Old Banned Classic Dystopian Book Revealed In First Animal Farm Trailer

A new animated movie version of George Orwell’s famous book, Animal Farm, directed by Andy Serkis, has found a distributor and released its first trailer. Angel has secured the rights to show the film in U.S. theaters, with a planned release date of May 1, 2026. The movie will first be shown at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival later this year.

Directed by Andy Serkis, known for his work on The Lord of the Rings, the new animated film Animal Farm boasts a star-studded voice cast including Seth Rogen, Glenn Close, Woody Harrelson, Kieran Culkin, Gaten Matarazzo, Laverne Cox, Jim Parsons, Kathleen Turner, Iman Vellani, and Serkis himself. Variety revealed the first trailer this morning, which you can watch below.

Published in 1945 by the author of 1984, Animal Farm tells the story of farm animals who rebel against their human farmer. This rebellion, however, results in a new, even harsher leadership, serving as a symbolic representation of the Russian Revolution and the Stalinist era. Both Animal Farm and 1984 are considered essential and enduring works of classic literature.

The actor and filmmaker, age 61, believes George Orwell’s Animal Farm feels particularly important today. He explains that with power, misleading information, and unfairness so present in our world, we need to remember Orwell’s warning. This new version of the story isn’t just meant to be entertaining; it’s a reminder that things like democracy, freedom, and honesty are delicate and require constant vigilance.
