Los Espookys: The 100% Rotten Tomatoes Horror Comedy Gem

Most horror shows aim to scare you, but Los Espookys is different – it’s genuinely funny. This comedy series, filmed in both English and Spanish, playfully spoofs the horror genre through the eyes of a quirky group of friends who absolutely love all things spooky.

If you’re looking for a unique and critically acclaimed show, check out the HBO gem Los Espookys. It’s rare for a TV series to get perfect scores across all seasons on Rotten Tomatoes, but this one does! Created by and starring genuine horror fans Julio Torres, Ana Fabrega, and Fred Armisen (from Portlandia), along with Bernardo Velasco and Cassandra Ciangherotti, the show is full of classic horror elements and is utterly charming.

Don’t go into Los Espookys expecting a typical horror comedy. It’s much smarter and gentler than something like the Scary Movie films, which rely on simple, obvious jokes. However, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a horror show that’s more enjoyable to watch.

What Is Los Espookys About?

Look, we’ve seen plenty of funny-scary movies, but Los Espookys really stands out. It’s a sitcom, and that format lets the humor land with a surprising amount of heart. It’s not just poking fun at horror tropes – you genuinely care about these weird, wonderful characters and their little business of staging spooky events. It’s a show built on a real love for both horror and the people who create the scares, and that makes it special.

I’m totally fascinated by this group! Renaldo, Andrés, Úrsula, and Tati are basically professional scarers – they use everything they know about horror movies to create really convincing, custom-made scares for people. Need to get someone out of a tough spot? They’ll happily terrify them into action! And it sounds like they have a blast doing it, especially with Renaldo’s uncle – played by Fred Armisen – cheering them on. It’s hilarious and creepy all at once!

Each character is endearingly silly in their own way, and together they playfully explore what makes horror so appealing by hilariously reimagining classic tropes. Los Espookys doesn’t rely on sudden scares; instead, it’s full of genuine laughter.

Los Espookys Is The Perfect Blend Of Horror & Comedy

Horror fans who enjoy a good laugh will find a lot to love in this show, including a funny take on the famous exorcism scene from The Exorcist and a deliberately underwhelming mattress-stabbing scene reminiscent of A Nightmare on Elm Street. It’s also highly recommended for anyone who appreciates clever, satirical comedy.

The story repeatedly highlights how easily fear can manipulate us. For example, a woman who can’t sleep finally drifts off when she’s led to believe she’s driving. And in another instance, a teacher uses a shocking event – a large bunny unexpectedly dying – to scare a class into staying out of the bathroom during lessons.

HBO Canceled Los Espookys Too Soon

The HBO Max series Los Espookys was cancelled in 2022. While the first season was popular, the second season had lower ratings. This was partly because the pandemic delayed the second season by two and a half years, and after that long break, fewer people tuned in to watch.

Julio Torres is spot-on when he says his show has the potential to become a beloved cult classic (according to Next TV). It’s likely that future audiences will discover and embrace Los Espookys, turning it into a popular show down the line.

We only have 12 episodes of this wonderfully unique and funny-scary show to enjoy. But Los Espookys packs every moment of its two seasons with both humor and a genuine appreciation for horror.
