Cillian Murphy’s Return as Thomas Shelby Drops First Look at Peaky Blinders Movie

The popular Netflix crime series is returning! The show was a huge hit, and now, three years later, a follow-up movie is on the way.

The popular historical crime drama first aired on BBC Two in 2013 and ran for six seasons until 2022. Netflix picked up the rights in 2021, and after the series ended, announced a movie to continue the story. The film will star Cillian Murphy reprising his role as Thomas Shelby, and Empire magazine has shared the first image of him back in character.

Just a few days after Netflix announced a March 20, 2026 release date, we’ve gotten our first glimpse of the movie! The new image echoes the official poster – Tommy, looking roughed up and bloody on horseback – but with a key difference. Instead of a stark landscape, he’s now riding through a crowded city, and it looks like everyone’s trying to grab him. It definitely amps up the sense of action and chaos, hinting at a much more frantic and desperate situation than the initial poster suggested.

The historical series spanned several decades, beginning in 1919 after World War I and concluding in the early 1930s. Now, The Immortal Man will jump forward in time to 1940.

Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders, says the upcoming film will conclude this part of the story. He wants it to feel like the end of a book, and hinted that Tommy Shelby will be pulled back into the action due to unforeseen events, though he didn’t specify what those events are.

Cillian Murphy, the Academy Award-winning actor, described the show’s ending as beautifully uncertain. He particularly liked that Thomas Shelby simply rides off, leaving his fate unknown, yet suggesting a return to his Romani roots. Murphy felt this cleverly connected the story back to its origins, placing him in the tumultuous setting of World War II and providing a satisfying conclusion.

Knight explained it’s like the final part of a lengthy book, where everything is brought to a satisfying conclusion. He hinted that it also sets the stage for future developments.

With The Immortal Man, Cillian Murphy finishes his role as Thomas Shelby, though the world of Peaky Blinders will continue. Murphy explained he won’t fully reflect on the experience until the film is released, as he feels a film isn’t truly complete until it’s been seen by an audience.

What’s Next for Peaky Blinders?

I can’t believe it, but Netflix has already greenlit a sequel series even though we haven’t even gotten the first one yet! Word started spreading back in April 2025, and it’s now official. What’s really exciting is that there’s going to be a huge time jump – the new show is set all the way back in 1953!

When the sequel series was announced, creator Steven Knight shared his excitement about continuing the Peaky Blinders saga. He explained that the new story will once again be set in Birmingham, focusing on the city’s rebuilding after the bombing raids of World War II. This time, the next generation of the Shelby family will be taking the lead, and Knight promises it will be a thrilling experience.

While details about the cast are limited, the new Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man series will feature Cillian Murphy returning, alongside Rebecca Ferguson (known for Dune and A House of Dynamite), Tim Roth (an Academy Award nominee from Reservoir Dogs and The Hateful Eight), Sophie Rundle (After the Flood, Gentleman Jack), Barry Keoghan (an Academy Award nominee from Saltburn and The Banshees of Inisherin), and Stephen Graham, a Primetime Emmy Award winner (Adolescence, Boiling Point).

Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man premieres on Mar. 20, 2026.
