Netflix Delays Star Search Reboot Premiere By One Week

Netflix is bringing back the classic talent show Star Search, but the premiere has been pushed back. The original Star Search first aired in 1983 and was known for discovering new stars in singing, dancing, and comedy.

Many famous stars, including Brad Garrett, Billy Porter, Adam Sandler, Alanis Morissette, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Destiny’s Child, Drew Carey, Justin Timberlake, LeAnn Rimes, Pitbull, Ray Romano, Rosie O’Donnell, and Usher, began their careers by appearing on the show Star Search.

After over four decades, Netflix is bringing back the talent show Star Search for a new audience. Actor Anthony Anderson, known for Black-ish, will host. However, the show’s debut has been pushed back a week, as reported by Variety. It will now premiere on January 20, 2026, instead of January 13th.

The release schedule stays the same: new episodes will drop every Tuesday and Wednesday at 9 p.m. Eastern Time. While watching, viewers can vote for their favorites. Unlike the 1983 version of Star Search where judges decided who moved forward, Netflix is letting the audience vote, encouraging them to tune in live.

The updated version of Star Search will feature familiar categories like music, dance, variety acts, comedy, magic, and a junior competition.

Netflix’s reboot isn’t just led by Anderson. Taraji P. Henson, known for her role in Empire, is also an executive producer, working with Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, Madison Merritt, and Elaine Metaxas. Jason Raff and David Friedman are the showrunners for the series.

Talent shows, especially singing competitions, have become incredibly popular on television in recent years. Shows like American Idol, America’s Got Talent, The Voice, and The X Factor are prime examples. Before these shows took off, Star Search was the most well-known talent competition and helped launch the careers of many performers.

The reality TV singing competition really took off in 2002 with the huge success of American Idol, which made stars out of singers like Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, and Adam Lambert. However, the genre soon became oversaturated with similar shows, many of which involved producer Simon Cowell, including Idol, The X Factor, and America’s Got Talent.

Simon Cowell, the well-known music executive and TV star, has a new show on Netflix called Simon Cowell: The Next Act. The show aims to find and create the next popular boy band, following his success with One Direction – the group that launched the careers of Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik.

After the success of American Idol, Star Search attempted a comeback in 2003 with a new version on CBS, but it was short-lived, lasting only a single season.

Star Search Franchise History
1983-1995 (Syndication)
2003-2004 (CBS)
2026 (Netflix)

Netflix, the leading streaming service, is bringing back the classic talent show, Star Search. While Netflix has tried similar shows like Building the Band, Sing On!, Rhythm + Flow, and Dance 100, none have the same level of recognition or history as Star Search.

The new version of Star Search may be pushed back a week, but when it finally arrives on Netflix, it’s hoped it will discover a fresh group of talented performers who can become major stars.

Star Search premieres Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET on Netflix.
