Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 Breaks Rotten Tomatoes Record For Critic-Audience Divide

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is making headlines for the huge difference between what critics and audiences think of it. While critics haven’t been kind to the horror sequel (released in theaters December 5th), fans of the original Five Nights at Freddy’s video game are enjoying it.

Currently, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 has a 15% rating from critics but an impressive 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. This creates an unusually large gap – 72% – between the two, setting a new record. Previously, The Boondock Saints (1999) held the record with a 65% difference between its 26% critic score and 91% audience score.

The first Five Nights at Freddy’s movie received mixed reactions, with a significant difference between critics’ and audiences’ opinions – Rotten Tomatoes scores were 33% and 86%, respectively. As of today, the sequel has 100 reviews and over 2,500 verified ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning its scores could still change.

Directed by Emma Tammi and written by the creator of the Five Nights at Freddy’s series, Scott Cawthon, the new film, based on the second game, continues the story a year after the first movie. It follows Abby Schmidt (Piper Rubio) as she reconnects with the animatronic characters, leading to discoveries about how Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza began.

The cast of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 features returning actors Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Matthew Lillard, Theodus Crane, and Kellen Goff. Joining them are new cast members Skeet Ulrich, Mckenna Grace, Teo Briones, Freddy Carter, Wayne Knight, and Megan Fox. Matthew Patrick, known as MatPat, now voices the character Toy Bonnie.

Critics generally see Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 as a step down from the first game, awkwardly repeating the same ideas without much improvement – much like a malfunctioning robot.

However, fans consistently rave about the animatronics, spooky atmosphere, and references to the game’s history. They say the sequel successfully delivers the thrills, story connections, and visual style that longtime players wanted. Although some admit the story feels rushed and the writing is a bit weak, and that some lore details have changed, most describe it as a fun, nostalgic, and exciting experience, particularly when enjoyed with fellow fans.

The disagreement between critics and audiences often comes down to what they expect from a movie. Dedicated fans are usually looking for hidden references, scary visuals, and more content related to the existing story, while critics evaluate it as a single film, focusing on its plot and how well it’s put together. For those already invested in the world of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, their enjoyment comes from their connection to the story, even if the movie isn’t perfect from a traditional filmmaking perspective.
