Are NCIS’s Torres And Knight Actually Getting Together? Brian Dietzen Gave Us His Take

Warning: SPOILERS for the NCIS episode “Stolen Moments” are ahead!

The second-to-last episode of NCIS this season recently aired. It featured Jimmy Palmer, played by Brian Dietzen, trying out a new AI program called D.A.W.N., as directed by Director Vance. The episode thoughtfully examined the benefits and drawbacks of using AI in law enforcement, and also prompted Jimmy to consider reconnecting with Jessica Knight. The ending of “Stolen Moments” gave fans of a potential romance between Knight and Nick Torres something to talk about, and Dietzen shared his thoughts on whether that storyline might actually happen.

As Jimmy prepared to talk to Knight during the closing scenes of “Stolen Moments,” he paused when he saw Torres briefly touch her back before they entered the elevator. Similar to how he felt about using D.A.W.N. on NCIS, Jimmy interpreted this as a signal that it wasn’t the right time to discuss rekindling their romance. I also wondered if Jimmy genuinely suspected a connection between Knight and Torres, so I asked Dietzen, who co-wrote the episode with Jesse Stern, about his thoughts.

It’s really up to interpretation. We deliberately didn’t make anything obvious because viewers might assume different things – like Jimmy missed his chance with Torres and Knight being together, or that he’s simply misunderstanding the situation. Others might think he realizes she’s moved on and is happy with her life, and doesn’t need him.

Jimmy Palmer and Jessica Knight began a romantic relationship towards the end of NCIS Season 19, and they continued dating through the Season 21 finale. At that point, Jessica accepted a position teaching with REACT in California. While she returned to the Washington D.C. team for Season 22, she and Jimmy realized a few episodes later that they wanted different things and decided to end their relationship, even though they still cared for each other. Jimmy hinted at this in the episode “Stolen Moments,” telling Nick Torres that the timing just wasn’t right.

As Brian Dietzen mentioned, the future of the relationship between Knight and Torres – whether it will become romantic – is still uncertain, though the October episode, “The Sound and the Fury,” made me start to consider that possibility. Regardless of what happens with them, Dietzen explained that Jimmy Palmer experienced personal growth after “Stolen Moments,” realizing he wants to achieve more in his life.

He might need time to fully process things and talk about them, but I was glad to see Jimmy finally realize he was wasting his time down in the basement when he really wanted to be upstairs. It was a powerful moment, even if it didn’t play out exactly as he hoped – he didn’t get the happy ending he imagined. Like we discussed, the ending was bittersweet, showing both positive and sad aspects all at once.

It’ll be some time before NCIS Season 23 explores Jimmy Palmer’s storyline further. Next week’s midseason finale will finally explain the circumstances surrounding Alden Parker’s mother’s death, following the shocking discovery about her death certificate. After that, the show will be on hiatus for a few months due to the Olympics. Even when it returns, fans may still have to wait to see if the Knight and Torres romance develops, or if Jimmy addresses his past with Knight.

Don’t forget to watch “Heaven and Nature” next Tuesday at 8 p.m. Eastern on CBS! While you wait for the new season, you can rewatch classic NCIS episodes on Paramount+ until the show comes back on February 24th.
