Daisy Ridley Had Heard “Rumblings” of Ben Solo ‘Star Wars’ Movie

Fans of Star Wars were surprised and upset to learn that Adam Driver had been working on a potential Ben Solo film with Steven Soderbergh. Daisy Ridley, who starred alongside Driver in the sequel trilogy, has now shared that she also feels disappointed about the project falling through. Ridley was the first main star from the sequels to agree to return to the franchise, having been confirmed to reprise her role as Rey in a new movie about building a New Jedi Order. Both Ridley and Driver’s passion for Star Wars has left many hoping they’ll be able to work together again in the future.

In an interview with IGN, Ridley said she knew about the project and was surprised that Adam Driver was the one who publicly announced it.

I had heard bits and pieces through friends who work on the production, so I wasn’t completely surprised. But when the full story came out, I was shocked! I remember [Driver] being the one who first revealed it.

She laughed, explaining that the biggest surprise was simply hearing Adam say it – something everyone found amusing.

The newest Star Wars trilogy sparked a lot of debate. Some fans enjoyed how it built on the original films, while others felt it retread familiar ground. Others praised its attempts to introduce fresh ideas, but some believed it strayed too far from what made the series special.

When the films came out, Ridley received a lot of negative feedback, which led her to stop using social media. However, she’s happy to see fans passionately reacting to the character of Ben Solo.

It’s really heartwarming to see so much positive energy coming together. The way people online have united around this is fantastic – it’s good for everyone to share something positive. While the character was already well-loved, it was especially nice to see how much people genuinely cared and wanted this to happen. I just appreciate when people from all over the world come together, despite their differences. I love that the Star Wars fandom is so diverse and inclusive, and seeing everyone support this is just lovely, especially considering how challenging things are for everyone right now. It’s wonderful, and I was genuinely joyful with how it all unfolded.

What Was the Ben Solo ‘Star Wars’ Movie?

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

I was so moved by The Rise of Skywalker – especially Kylo Ren’s redemption arc! Seeing Adam Driver’s character, Ben Solo, ultimately sacrifice himself to save Rey was incredibly powerful. Honestly, I thought that meant we’d seen the last of him in the Star Wars universe. So, I was really surprised and excited to hear him recently tell AP News about the possibility of a spin-off movie!

We showed the screenplay to Lucasfilm, and they were enthusiastic about it, really getting what we were trying to achieve. However, when we presented it to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman, they rejected it. Their main concern was the idea that Ben Solo was still alive, and that ended the discussion.

I worked on a project called ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo,’ which was a lot of fun. Since the project is finished now, I’m able to share details about it.

Unlike some other stars from the Star Wars films who have been open about wanting—or not wanting—to return, many people thought Adam Driver would never reprise his role. However, he recently revealed he’s always been eager to come back. He explained that he’d been discussing a potential return with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy since 2021, and that he was ready to do another film if the director and story were strong. He really enjoyed playing the character and was keen to do it again.

Despite the news that Sigourney Weaver will reprise her role in a follow-up film, there haven’t been any significant details shared about the sequel since it was originally announced in 2023.
