Guy Ritchie Quietly Scores Streaming Hit As The Covenant Returns 2 Years Later

This filmmaker has consistently drawn audiences to both cinemas and television. That trend is continuing now with streaming, as his war thriller from two years ago is suddenly gaining popularity online.

2025 was a fantastic year for the director. Several of his films and shows, both new and old, gained popularity on streaming platforms. This includes the crime drama MobLand, featuring Tom Hardy, where he directed multiple episodes, and the adventure film Fountain of Youth. Now, his thriller The Covenant, released two years ago, is also performing well on streaming, according to FlixPatrol.

The thriller film The Covenant quickly gained popularity on Netflix in the U.S., starting at number nine on December 8th and climbing to sixth place just one day later.

While many know it from Netflix, The Covenant is also a huge success on other streaming services. It reached number one in 11 European countries on HBO Max, and recently topped the charts on Prime Video in Finland.

Besides these hits, Ritchie’s projects are performing well across platforms. Currently, it’s the 10th most popular show on Starz in the U.S., while MobLand is gaining international traction as viewers eagerly anticipate its second season. Fountain of Youth is a global success, ranking fifth worldwide on Apple TV and ninth in the U.S.

Guy Ritchie’s film, The Covenant, tells the story of US Army Sergeant John Kinley and his Afghan interpreter, Ahmed. After being ambushed, Ahmed bravely risks everything to save Kinley. When Kinley discovers Ahmed and his family haven’t been granted the promised safe passage to the US, he feels obligated to return to Afghanistan and rescue them from the Taliban.

While the war thriller is based on real events, the characters and specific storyline are fictionalized. The film is inspired by the shared experiences of interpreters from the Middle East and American soldiers.

Ritchie not only directed the film but also co-wrote the screenplay with his long-time partners Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies. The trio also produced the movie alongside Josh Berger, continuing a collaboration that includes films like The Gentlemen and Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre.

Jake Gyllenhaal leads the cast of The Covenant as Master Sergeant John Kinley. The film also features Antony Starr, Dar Salim, Alexander Ludwig, Sean Sagar, Bobby Schofield, Emily Beecham, and Jonny Lee Miller.

Despite receiving positive reviews – 82% from critics and an impressive 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes – the film The Covenant didn’t perform well at the box office. Made with a $55 million budget, it only earned $20.7 million in ticket sales, according to The Numbers.

Guy Ritchie Is Going Back to His Detective Franchise

Guy Ritchie has worked on a wide range of films, from the live-action Aladdin and recent adventure movies to several action titles. He’s also known for directing two Sherlock Holmes films, which came out in 2009 and 2011, and now he’s revisiting the Sherlock Holmes universe.

I was really excited to hear that in 2024, a new take on Sherlock Holmes is coming! It’s a series called Young Sherlock, and it’s completely separate from the fantastic movies with Robert Downey Jr. Apparently, it’s going to show us Sherlock’s very first murder case – how cool is that? We’re looking at a 2026 release, so there’s still a bit of a wait, but I’m already intrigued!

Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant is streaming on Netflix.
