Cyclops Just Learned Something That Could Destroy His Entire Team

A major Marvel character is hiding something that could drastically alter the direction of the X-Men’s story for a long time.

Following a tough battle with the Seraphim from Revelation, the heroes of Amazing X-Men #3 (written by Jed MacKay, with art by Mahmud Asrar and Matthew Wilson, and letters by Clayton Cowles) finally reconnect with their allies who are hiding under Philadelphia. They share updates and information, and Cyclops is especially curious about how Magneto overcame his health condition, Resurrection-Linked Degeneration Syndrome. But Wiz-Kid reveals that Magneto never actually had that illness, which has significant consequences for both what happened in the past and what’s happening now.

Resurrection-Linked Degenerative Syndrome, or R-LDS, became a notable idea in Marvel Comics towards the end of the Krakoan Age. When the nation of Krakoa was at its peak, Magneto often recklessly put himself in danger, consistently risking his life to win battles, knowing he could be brought back to life afterwards.

It didn’t take long to become clear that repeatedly being resurrected was severely affecting Magneto, both physically and mentally. In the 2024 X-Men #7 comic by Jed MacKay and Netho Diaz, he suffered complications from the Resurrection-Linked Database System (R-LDS), which forced Cyclops to subdue him with an optic blast. Initially, it appeared R-LDS might be a permanent problem for all mutants, but Cyclops recently discovered information that suggests this might not be the case.

Okay, so imagine ten years from now in the Marvel Universe. This guy, he’s taken over from Apocalypse – they’re calling him Revelation now – and he’s basically running a huge chunk of North America. He thinks he’s building a perfect world for mutants, and honestly, most people aren’t even fighting him! He’s got these powerful followers – the Seraphim and Choristers – and they’re spreading his ideas everywhere. It’s kinda scary how easily he’s taking over, but he really believes he’s doing what’s best for mutantkind.

Despite the widespread changes, resistance groups still exist around the world, with the Amazing X-Men leading the charge against Revelation and his forces. Writer Jed MacKay has explained that the events unfolding in the affected areas – and beyond – will determine the fate of the world, potentially ushering in a new era or bringing everything to an end. He’s been thrilled to see other writers contribute to and expand upon this shared universe.

Amazing X-Men #3 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
