The Future Of Netflix’s Russian Doll Season 3 Explained

Netflix’s quirky series, Russian Doll, created by Natasha Lyonne, Leslye Headland, and Amy Poehler, may not be getting a third season. The show, which blends psychological thrills, comedy, and mystery, stars Lyonne as Nadia, a New Yorker who unexpectedly relives her 36th birthday in the first season—a bit like the movie Groundhog Day. Season two takes Nadia on a journey through time as she deals with difficult experiences from her past.

The first two seasons of Russian Doll hinted at a possible third season. The initial episodes focused on Nadia’s journey to understand aging and death, and overcome her fear of the future. Season two then taught her to let go of the past and forgive her mother. It seemed logical that a third season would explore a final lesson about living in the present. However, it’s been three years since the last season aired, and there haven’t been many updates about Russian Doll season 3.

Netflix’s Russian Doll Season 3 Is On An Indefinite Hold

Following the release of Russian Doll season 2 on Netflix in 2022, Natasha Lyonne told Variety that plans for a third season existed. She explained that its development depended on how well season 2 was received. While season 2 wasn’t as popular as the first, it did reasonably well, especially given the large number of shows returning after the COVID-related production delays. Despite this, there hasn’t been any official announcement about Russian Doll season 3.

While it’s disheartening for fans, Russian Doll hasn’t been completely canceled by Netflix – it’s currently on hold. There’s still a chance we could see a third season announced in the future, as Natasha Lyonne has said she’ll always be connected to the show. However, she’s also made it clear that making more episodes isn’t her focus right now.

Natasha Lyonne Must Achieve 1 Goal Before Russian Doll Season 3 Could Happen

Following the success of Russian Doll, Natasha Lyonne gained even more attention with Poker Face. Unfortunately, Peacock recently cancelled the show after just two seasons. Despite this, Lyonne isn’t giving up on Poker Face. She and the show’s creator, Rian Johnson, are looking for a new home for the series and are considering Peter Dinklage to take over Lyonne’s role. While this is an interesting plan, it highlights Lyonne’s continued focus on developing new projects.

Natasha Lyonne mentioned to Deadline that she’d consider being on Poker Face in the future, but her main focus right now is directing her own film. She explained, “If I don’t make a movie before I die, I’ll be really disappointed, so I just want to get one feature film completed, and then we’ll see what happens.”

While discussing Poker Face, Natasha Lyonne suggested a certain condition would also apply to Russian Doll. The show isn’t canceled, but a third season seems unlikely unless Lyonne stars in another feature film and Poker Face gets renewed for a third season. If those things happen, then Russian Doll season 3 might become a possibility.
