Sydney Sweeney quickly became popular with audiences after playing Cassie Howard, launching her to fame. Since then, she’s appeared in a number of movies and commercials.
Earlier this year, Sydney Sweeney participated in an American Eagle advertising campaign. The campaign, featuring a pun about her and the jeans (“Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans”), sparked criticism online in late July, with many people arguing it promoted eugenics. Sweeney recently spoke to People magazine to address the controversy after several months of silence.
I was really surprised by how people reacted,” Sweeney said. “I only did it because I genuinely like the jeans and I’m a fan of the brand.
Regarding the recent criticism, Sweeney explained she doesn’t agree with the opinions of some individuals who became associated with the campaign. She stated that many assumptions made about her motives and character are inaccurate, emphasizing that she always strives to be kind and opposes hatred and division.
People who know me know I believe in bringing people together and strongly oppose hate and division. I used to avoid responding to media coverage, both good and bad, but I’ve realized that staying silent hasn’t helped bridge differences—it’s actually made things worse. I’m hoping the new year will bring more emphasis on our common ground instead of what sets us apart.
She first spoke about the advertisement in early November while being interviewed for GQ’s “Men of the Year” issue, but didn’t share many details then. She explained, “I did a jeans ad, and the reaction was definitely unexpected. I really love jeans—they’re all I wear. Honestly, I live in jeans and a T-shirt every single day.”
The situation even prompted a response from White House communications manager Steve Cheung, and even caught the attention of the President. After discovering Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, he remarked, “If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic!”
Sydney Sweeney Had a Busy Year
Despite facing some public controversies, Sydney Sweeney had a very active 2025. Her year began with a show that didn’t win over critics, but became a big hit on Apple TV. She also appeared in Ron Howard’s thriller Eden, which didn’t do well in theaters. In fact, several of her projects didn’t perform as expected this year, including some films and a television series.
Sydney Sweeney, known for her role in Euphoria, has another movie coming out this year: The Handmaid, directed by Paul Feig. She stars alongside Amanda Seyfried in this psychological thriller, which is based on the popular novel by Freida McFadden. Brandon Sklenar, from It Ends With Us, and Michele Morrone, who appeared in Another Simple Favor, also feature in the film. The Handmaid will be released on December 19th.
