Spencer Dutton survived the events of 1923 with no lasting harm, even though he faced some of the biggest challenges anyone in the Yellowstone family has ever experienced.
The next chapter in the Dutton family story, set in 1944, is coming soon, and Brandon Sklenar, who plays Spencer Dutton, is prepared to return if needed for future projects within Taylor Sheridan’s universe.
Sklenar expressed enthusiasm about potentially reprising his popular character in the upcoming 1944 cast (according to Today). While playing Spencer again would mean he’d need to appear 20 years older, Sklenar suggested he’s willing to undergo that change.
He joked, “I’d actually like to see what I’d look like with more wrinkles and graying hair. Give me a glimpse of the future!”
In 1923, Spencer tragically lost his wife, Alexandra, shortly after she gave birth to their son, John Dutton II. John Dutton II would later become the father of John Dutton III, the character played by Kevin Costner.
The proposed series, set in 1944, would likely follow the story of John Dutton II during World War II. As established in the show 1923, Spencer would still be alive during this period, with a flash-forward revealing he lived to be an old man and passed away in 1969.
Sklenar has previously expressed his interest in reprising his role as the older Spencer Dutton, a character he found difficult to move past after filming finished on 1923.
The actor shared that playing the character Spencer profoundly impacted and changed him, and he’s eager to reprise the role in any way possible, according to Variety.
Taylor Sheridan, the creator of Yellowstone, is making big changes to where his shows will air. He’s ended his relationship with Paramount+ and signed a new, large agreement with NBCUniversal.
Since Paramount still owns Yellowstone and its related shows, 1944 would likely be filmed before Taylor Sheridan’s contract ends in 2028.
While news about Spencer Dutton’s future is pending, Sklenar is already working on a new project with Sheridan. The upcoming thriller, F.I.R.E., will feature an actor from 1923, and Sheridan himself wrote the script and is also producing the film.
I’m so excited for December 19th! That’s when I’ll finally get to see Sklenar in The Housemaid, a really intriguing psychological thriller. It’s directed by Paul Feig and stars Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, which is amazing in itself! From what I understand, it explores a difficult family dynamic, a bit like 1923, but thankfully, it seems to trade in the wild west dangers for something a little more…domestic, without the wolves or freezing temperatures!
