A hugely popular action movie from recent years has just left the top spot on streaming charts. It’s a continuation of a classic film from the 1980s, and with so many ’80s action franchises getting new installments – like Predator, Road House, The Running Man, and Rambo – it could be any number of movies. But this one takes you right back to the danger zone! Top Gun: Maverick, the thrilling sequel to the 1986 hit Top Gun, enjoyed a long run at the top, but its time there is now over.
You can now watch Top Gun: Maverick on Paramount+. After doing incredibly well in theaters in 2022, it also became a huge hit on the streaming service, staying in the top 10 for over 450 days – almost a year and a half! Recently, though, it’s been bumped from the number 10 spot. Currently, Tom Cruise’s lesser-known crime thriller, American Made, is number one. Other films in the top 10 include The Equalizer and its sequel, the Naked Gun reboot with Liam Neeson, Django Unchained, Step Brothers, and A PAW Patrol Christmas – a bit of a change of pace from Top Gun, but potentially enjoyable!
As we’ve discussed, Top Gun: Maverick was a huge success in 2022, earning nearly $1.5 billion worldwide. Despite concerns about people returning to movie theaters after the COVID-19 pandemic, the film exceeded expectations and became Tom Cruise’s highest-grossing movie ever. It was the second highest-grossing film of the year, only behind Avatar: The Way of Water. Both critics and audiences loved it, giving it a 96% rating and a remarkable 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. One viewer called it “a future classic.” For those who haven’t seen it – and there are only a few! – here’s the official story:
Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a highly skilled Navy pilot with over thirty years of experience, continues to thrive as a daring test pilot, deliberately avoiding promotions that would force him to stop flying. He gets a chance to train a group of Top Gun graduates for an incredibly dangerous mission unlike any ever flown. Among them is Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s late friend and co-pilot, Goose. As Maverick prepares for this challenging assignment, he’s forced to confront his past and his deepest fears, ultimately facing a mission that will require everything from those who fly it.
What’s Going on With ‘Top Gun 3’?

Paramount Pictures
Given the huge success of Top Gun: Maverick, another sequel was always likely. Tom Cruise is set to return as Maverick in Top Gun 3, proving that the desire for thrilling action hasn’t faded – but it may be a while before we see it.
A third Top Gun movie was announced in January 2024. Director Joseph Kosinski, along with actors Miles Teller and Glen Powell, are all returning for the sequel. Kosinski recently hinted that this new film will be even more ambitious and large in scope than the blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, stating:
We’ve come up with a way to make this project work, both in terms of its scope and the story it tells. We’re aiming for something much grander than before. This film explores a deep, personal crisis for Maverick, but it’s about more than just him – it tackles a bigger, universal question. It’s something that really makes you think, and I don’t want to reveal too much, but it’s a challenge that could make Maverick feel insignificant compared to the themes we’re exploring.
