I Can’t Believe I Missed Zootopia’s Other Sequel Until Now

Before Zootopia 2 came out, plans for a different sequel to the original Zootopia were actually developed – and I’m surprised it took me this long to discover it. The success of Zootopia 2 has greatly expanded the world of the animated film, and the hints at a future story involving birds in the post-credits scene suggest we’ll see even more sequels.

While those two films are definitely the highlights, they aren’t the only successful parts of the Zootopia franchise. The popular Zootopia-themed areas in amusement parks prove that, but many people may not realize there’s also a lesser-known sequel that actually came out years ago.

Another Zootopia Sequel Project Released In 2022

It had been nine years since the first Zootopia movie when Zootopia 2 came out, but in between those films, Disney+ released Zootopia+ in 2022. This series continues the story of Zootopia, expanding on parts of the original film and showing us more of the world and characters we loved.

These short films expand on events that happened behind the scenes in Zootopia and offer a glimpse into the lives of supporting characters between the first and second movies. We see heartwarming moments like the wedding of Fru Fru, the arctic shrew, and even a short-lived attempt by Duke Weaselton to leave his life of crime behind.

Zootopia+ Is The Perfect Addition To The Series

Released between the first and second Zootopia movies, Zootopia+ naturally bridges the gap between them. This is due to its release timing and its focus on expanding the established world and stories.

Just like the films, Zootopia+ adds something special to the franchise by exploring the world from a different angle. The Zootopia movies do a great job of focusing on Judy and Nick’s story and development, but this also means some of the interesting side characters don’t get as much attention as they deserve.

Because of this, Zootopia+ is a great addition, giving some of the movie’s most memorable side characters their own stories and making the world feel even more detailed and expansive. With the success of the Zootopia sequel, we can hope to see more of these short stories, which will continue to build upon the series’ rich universe.
