I’m really enjoying the latest issue of the Legacy of Vader comic! It takes place between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, and it was so cool to see Kylo Ren using a completely different lightsaber than the one we’re used to. The story follows him as he goes to Mustafar, trying to learn more about his grandfather, Darth Vader, and how he embraced the dark side. He even has a battle with Vaneé, who looks after Vader’s castle, Fortress Vader. It’s a fascinating look into Kylo’s journey!
Kylo Ren’s never-before-seen lightsaber gets first look
The eleventh issue of Star Wars: Legacy of Vader begins with Kylo Ren recovering in a bacta tank. Vaneé, hoping to see Darth Vader reborn through Kylo, tells him he needs to embrace death. She points out that Anakin Skywalker also had to die, and that death is a crucial part of the Skywalker family’s path.
Vanée attempts to recreate Darth Vader’s origin by trapping Ren in Vader’s armor and trying to drown him in lava. Ren manages to free himself and escape, but as he does, Vanée brags about his intelligence, his history of serving Vader, and Vader’s powerful legacy. Ren pointedly ignores Vanée, even when Vanée claims he helped Ren follow in Vader’s footsteps specifically so Ren could eventually succeed him.
Kylo Ren faces off against a squad of Darktroopers, initially fighting without a weapon. He then finds a collection of Jedi lightsabers and grabs one with a gold handle that projects a green blade, using it to repel the Darktroopers. However, Ren corrupts the blade with the dark side of the Force, turning it red. The lightsaber’s energy becomes erratic and unstable, probably because of Ren’s incredible power in the Force and his unique connection to Rey.
Ren finished off the last of the Darktroopers with his lightsaber and then faced Vanée, who admitted defeat and asked Ren to end his life. Before doing so, Ren questioned Vanée about the existence of Vader’s Vault and whether it held the key to great power. Vanée confessed he didn’t know, as Vader had never allowed him access.
It’s a really powerful scene – as I watched Ren defeat Vanée, he actually told him he already was everything he needed to be. And Vanée’s last words? He was thrilled that Ren had carried on Vader’s legacy. It’s a chilling moment, showing how deeply Vanée was committed to that ideology.
