The Batman 2 Finds Great Replacement for Oscar-Winning DP

An Oscar-winner has joined the production of The Batman 2.

The Batman 2, a sequel to the 2023 film, is planned for release in 2027. Matt Reeves is directing, and Robert Pattinson will return as Batman/Bruce Wayne.

Who has joined the production of The Batman 2?

According to Jeff Sneider’s report, Erik Messerschmidt will be the cinematographer for the upcoming Batman sequel.

Greig Fraser was the cinematographer on The Batman. He previously won an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on Denis Villeneuve’s Dune in 2021, and also received nominations for Lion (2016) and Dune: Part Two (2024). Currently, Fraser is collaborating with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller on Project Hail Mary, and is also involved with Sam Mendes’ upcoming Beatles films.

Let me tell you, Erik Messerschmidt is a cinematographer who’s really making a name for himself. He took home an Oscar for his stunning work on David Fincher’s Mank in 2020, and he hasn’t slowed down since. Just recently, he lensed Devotion and The Killer (both 2022 & 2023 respectively), as well as Ferrari this year. And it doesn’t stop there! He’s currently working with Ridley Scott on the upcoming The Dog Stars set for 2026, and he’s even teaming up with Fincher again for The Adventures of Cliff Booth. Beyond film, he’s also built a fantastic resume in television, having shot episodes of shows like Mindhunter, Legion, Fargo, Raised by Wolves, and Dope Thief. Seriously, keep an eye on this guy – he’s a talent!

Details about the story for The Batman 2 are still secret. Director Matt Reeves wrote the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin, and Dylan Clark is producing the film. After some setbacks, filming is now planned to start next year.

The next Batman movie is coming to US cinemas on October 1, 2027. You can currently watch the first Batman film and the spin-off series, The Penguin, on HBO Max.
