Victoria is a British historical drama that brings to life the stories of many figures from the British royal family. The series begins with the young Victoria becoming queen at age 18 in 1837, after the death of her uncle, King William IV. It follows her as she adjusts to her new role, dealing with political challenges, family drama, and international crises. The show shares similarities with the Netflix series, Empress.

The historical drama Victoria aired from 2016 to 2019, spanning three seasons. Each season explored a different stage in Queen Victoria’s life and reign. The show centered not only on the Queen herself, but also on important relationships and experiences, including her bond with Lord Melbourne, her marriage to Prince Albert, and the joys and challenges of becoming a mother to Princess Victoria.

Jenna Coleman, Rufus Sewell, Tom Hughes, Catherine Flemming, and Peter Bowles star in Victoria, a series created by Daisy Goodwin. It first aired on ITV in the UK on August 28, 2016, and finished on May 12, 2019. The show is becoming popular again now that it’s available on Netflix, having been added on December 1, 2025.

Queen Victoria

The story of Victoria centers on Queen Alexandrina Victoria, who unexpectedly became Queen of England at just 18 years old. Although several male relatives were ahead of her in line for the throne, none of them had surviving children, which ultimately made Victoria the sole heir.

The historical drama series followed Queen Victoria’s life in three stages. The first season explored the beginning of her reign, concentrating on her close relationships with Lord Melbourne and Prince Albert.

Okay, so Season 2 really dug into the pressure on the Queen – trying to juggle running a country with being a mom and wife. It was intense! Then, Season 3? It’s all about Victoria and Albert’s life as a couple, and the chaos of raising their six kids while still being in charge of everything. It’s fascinating to see how they navigated that!

Prince Albert

Prince Albert, who would become the husband of Queen Victoria, didn’t have a perfect first impression with her. They initially focused on their differences, but they eventually fell in love, and became engaged relatively quickly – by the third episode of the first season of their story.

Despite the challenges of marrying a queen, Albert eventually became a beloved husband to Victoria, and together they had nine children.

Princess Victoria

Princess Victoria, the mother of the Queen, also holds the title of Duchess of Kent. She is the sister of both Ernest I and King Leopold.

Their relationship became strained because the mother was overly controlling and possessive. Despite the mother’s influence, Queen Victoria’s determined spirit and independence allowed her to break free from the difficult dynamic and establish her own identity.

Prince Ernest II 

Prince Ernest II is a member of the royal family featured in Victoria. He’s Queen Victoria’s cousin and Albert’s more carefree brother. Although he can be a bit impulsive, he’s fiercely loyal, particularly to Albert. He demonstrated this in Season 2, Episode 1, when he offered helpful guidance to Albert during a difficult time in his marriage to Queen Victoria.

King Ernest Augustus

King Ernest Augustus was Queen Victoria’s uncle – he was one of King George III’s sons. In the first season of the show Victoria, he largely played the role of the antagonist, mostly because he was upset that Victoria became queen instead of him.

King Leopold I

King Leopold I of Belgium was Queen Victoria’s uncle – the brother of her father, Prince Albert, and Prince Ernest I. He played a key role in bringing Queen Victoria and Prince Albert together, and they eventually fell in love and married.

Ernest I

Ernest I was the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and the father of both Ernest II and Albert. He was also Queen Victoria’s uncle on her mother’s side. In Season 2, Episode 2, Albert described his father as recklessly extravagant, which created tension between them.

Ernest I isn’t a flawless father to Albert and Ernest II, and his relationship with them is particularly strained after it’s revealed in Season 2, Episode 4, that he was unfaithful to their mother.

Princess Feodora

In Season 3 of Victoria, Princess Feodora of Leiningen is revealed to be Queen Victoria’s half-sister with a difficult past. Episode 6 explains that her mother and Leopold sent her away because King George IV was considering arranging a marriage for her with one of his brothers, hoping for an heir to the throne.

Queen Frederica

Joining the royal family tree is Queen Frederica of Hanover, Victoria’s paternal aunt by marriage. 

Prince George

In the series Victoria, Prince George of Cambridge is Queen Victoria’s first cousin and the son of Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge. He appeared briefly in the first season as a possible husband for the Queen, but Prince Albert’s arrival ended any chance of a romance.

Vicky

Princess Victoria, the eldest child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, married Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia. He later became the German Emperor. Although depicted as young in the show, the historical princess married him much earlier in life.

Bertie

Prince Albert Edward, the oldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, later became King Edward VII. This makes Queen Elizabeth II his great-great-granddaughter, connecting her directly to Victoria’s lineage.

Prince Augustus

Queen Victoria presented King Ernest Augustus of Hanover as her father’s brother and Cecilia’s husband. He often opposes the main characters and is considered by some, like Rebecca Star Brown, to be a threatening presence in British politics.

Cecilia Underwood

Cecilia Underwood was married to Prince Augustus and became Queen Victoria’s aunt through marriage. In late March 1840, she was given the title Duchess of Inverness.

Heidi

Princess Adelheid, nicknamed “Heidi,” is Queen Victoria’s half-niece, being the daughter of Victoria’s sister Feodora. In Season 3 of the show Victoria, a possible marriage between Heidi and Napoleon III is explored as a way for Victoria to limit Feodora’s increasing power.
